Yes, I would leave norton if manual options are removed. I did it once before in 06 nav. Went to Kaspersky for a year or so.
I agree that theres not really a need for manual (or any) scans if realtime protection is on. But we dont all use it in the same way... sure NAV/NIS is going to be designed for the most populace base of consumers... but adding a tiny bit more control will greatly increase the potential subscribers.
Sometimes, I'm on closed networks and need every resource I can get my hands on. Sometimes I'm not. Lets face it, if your system isnt the absolute top-of-the-line,norton will use system resources. It will be slightly noticible. Sometimes I'm absolutely trusting the media and connections I'm on. Most of the time, I'm not. I had this conversation a few years back and my reply was something about going into a bunker with secure networks and needing to scan every peice of outside media where we used a private civilian LAN.He says...yea, but how many people are ever in that situation? Answer: about half a million.

Well on my p4 Norton 360 was mericfully light and now I have NIS09 and its like not there.
I think I mis-read the original question. I for one would like to keep the option to do a manual scan. Sometimes if I get a bad vibe about something, I like to do a quick scan.
I run a full system scan daily. Reading the posts here and the link to the other post, it seems that there is really no need to do it daily, but if it doesn't cause a problem, then why not. I have it set to run at night when I'm asleep
Why on Earth do you run a full system scan daily? That’s absurd and paranoia city. You do not need to do that. With NIS 2009 its all automatic. Full scan runs about every 7-10 days.

It is up to you if you want to do Full System Scans Daily or not; if it makes you feel better, then feel free to do it. We only can suggest things for the User to do. Also, if you are asleep, you are not using your computer, so it will not hurt. What I would strongly suggest would be to Dis-connect from the Internet before doing to bed so that, if Norton AntiVirus 2008 finds anything and Removes it, you do not get re-infected.
Guess I would say good bye norton and hello Nod32, because I like to scan my system when I get spooked, like today. when norton gave me this cryptic live update notice and scared the hell out of me. Mind you thats not hard to do anymore, now days. I have too much stress in my life right now. Please don’t take my manual scan away, please!!

As for me, I wouldn't care that much if the feature was removed. However, if they removed the on-demand scanning feature, how would Norton paticipate in all the major antivirus tests, which test detection of on-demand scanning?
NY1986…you are paranoid way beyond control. If somebody is going to break into your house there are goanna do it. Two locks and a gate will not stop anyone who really wants to get in. People put car alarms on there cars and guess what…There car gets stolen anyways. People have antivirus on there pc’s and guess what…They still get infected. Life is meant to be lived not feared. Hell why even turn your pc on then. So what if you get infected. Reformat and your back to normal.

So, really, you are telling people to un-install their Anti-Virus Software because you can always re-format; what happens if some people do not want to re-format their computer, huh?
I live in Texas, so If someone trys to get in our car or house, the two locks or the car alarm allows us time to get out shotguns and rifles , so yes there is value to the two locks/and car alarm.
Diesel, I undertsand what you are saying. especially for me, just a regular dude. If my machine ghets infected, there isn’t much they can take. If they steal my bank password, I guess they’d leave a trail if they transfered money out of my account. Then I could sue the bank for not maintaining security. As far as my id, I’m sure it has already been stolen. Heck, any of us who went to university in the last 20 years have our ID’s housed on systems that are probably faulty. So yes your are right to some extent. Guess its just the audacity that people have to be #@%^ and mess things up for the rest of us. (I’m not referring to you but the “bad guys” out there)

What has "shotguns" and "rifles" got to do with Internet Security, or, indeed, this Thread?
Please can we keep it to the Thread Subject, which is: "Poll: Manual Scanning"; thanks!
