Possible virus?

Hi

I, rather stupidly, opened an email this morning from an unknown source. I'm currently doing virus scans however I've just noticed that two new devices have appeared in my network security map. One is from Hon Hai precision industries and the other just says unknown. I've blocked them from accessing anything but don't really know what to do now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Has anyone had this on their computer...When I am in "mail" I keep getting a tab flashing at the top that say "bonitaferraro001has sent you a message".  It does not show up as a "mail", just the tab at the top.  I "x" it out, it then gives me a prompt asking if I want to lose the message, I hit OK, it's gone for a while, then reappears again.  THis has been going on for a couple weeks.  I've run scans several times and it still shows up.  I'm afraid there is some sort of "infection" attached to this and don't know what to do. Any ideas or advice?  I'm not the most computer literate, as you can tell here.  Thanks, Sue

Hi Sue,,

If you could tell us what you mean by in "mail".  The name of the mail client (program) would be helpful, along with your operating system.

It almost sounds like some kind of popup from a messaging program to me, but we do need more info to be sure.

Did you just buy an iPhone 5? Hon Hai precision is also known as Foxconn, which is involved in producing the iPhone 5.

Your phone would be trying to connect to the internet, so you would need to allow that in the network security map.

The unknown device may also be related, but you can wait to see if something you use stops working.

What was the content of the suspect email?

Nope, don't have an iphone 5 and no one in my house does so I don't think it could be that. I went to delete the email but mistakenly clicked on it as my laptop pad isn't very good. It was just plain text - no attachements and it looks like I haven't downloaded anything.

I've restricted it, and checked its not messed with my firewalls and nothing seems to have changed execpt for some logs, but as I'm not very computer literate I don't know whether thats normal or not. I've disabled remote access and have done Norton and MBAM scans and they're not picking anything up.

If anyone else can think of anything to help that I haven't already done?

If you have scanned with Norton and MBAM, it does seem you do not have any malware. If no other symptoms are showing up on your computer, like browser redirects, or slower than normal operation, I would say you are OK.

Many connected devices now will show up in the Network Security Map.

My household thermostat, TV, iPads, etc show up in the map. To identitfy what is connecting, you need to go to each device that might connect to the internet and look for their MAC address in the settings for the device. Then look at the details for the devices shown in the Security Map. Then you can change the name so you can identitfy it next time.

Hi helpz28,

You cannot become infected by viewing an email message in plain text.  Hon Hai would probably be a wireless adapter in one of your devices - I have one in an HP notebook.
