I tried to give my computer a regular Full System Scan last night but the scan failed and I was prompted to download the Power Eraser and run it to solve the problem. I downloaded and followed the prompts but an error message came up - which I should have noted but didn't - and I was prompted to click in order to send an auto-report to Symantec which I did.
I've tried running the Power Eraser again and it works fine when I run it without the re-start Rootkit scan, but when I try to do it with the Rootkit scan on the re-start the scan doesn't begin and all I get is the desktop!
I fear I may have a Rootkit hiding in my start up somewhere and it has also managed to disable the Power Eraser Rootkit scan function.
Can you help?

Not sure if deleting the Power Eraser and re-loading it will do any good. I tried to delete it but the file is sitting in Sony Picture Utility\PMBCore and says that deleting it only removes the shortcut/icon that points to the program and to find it in Programs and Features...but I can't find it in there!
Not sure what to do...Not sure if this is even the right place to ask for help.
Tried running it again but got the same result and was asked to submit a report, but I don't think that guarentees a responce.
Any ideas?
Welcome,
In addition to NPE what other Norton products do you have loaded? Have you tried runniing a scan from safe mode? One other tool that is Norton compatible is the free version of Malwarebytes scanner. Download it, install it, update it and run it. The keep it around for 'just in case'.
Let us know how it goes, we'll keep a light on
Hello muggwhump
Malwarebytes will not do anything for you if you suspect you have a rootkit. I would suggest that you visit one of the free malware removal forums where they work 1 to 1 with you to help you remove malware and rootkits. They have the proper tools and can tell you the proper scans to run and have the expertise to help you to safely remove the malware.
Please go to one of these free Forums for help in removing your bad malware or rootkits.

Please come back and let us know how you made out. You can also just ask them if they think you have malwarre. Thanks.
Hi Dick, thanks for the reply. At the moment I'm running Norton Anti-Virus 2011. I downloaded the Malwarebytes onto a USB stick and ran it...didn't turn anything up. I'll give the Safe Mode scan a go and see if it finds anything.
Thanks again for the help

Be sure to read and follow the suggestions given in floplot's message. I'd put more stock in those than I do in mine.
Hi floplot, thanks for the help with my problem. I've just got back after being away for a while so haven't had a chance to check in until now. I'll try those sites you suggested over the weekend and will post back with the outcome. Haven't noticed any visible problems with my computer yet although I do have a pop-up blocker and no javascript add-on enabled.
Thanks for the help
