Premature Subscription Renewal and double billing

I subscribed for Norton VPN, LifeLock identity, and Norton 360 for ONE YEAR in December 2025. Now, almost 3 months later, I received an email saying my subscription is expiring in a month and my credit card would be charged $185 for another year in a month. What’s going on? Is it scam? Seems like it is not. Any idea?

Thanks

Russ

Subscription Expiration Notice Analysis :shield:

Based on the timing and the amount mentioned, this situation is highly suspicious. If you purchased a one-year subscription in December 2025, it should not be expiring in April 2026.

There are two likely scenarios: either this is a sophisticated phishing scam, or there is a legitimate billing overlap on your account.

1. Is it a Scam? (Most Likely)

Phishing emails often use “urgent” renewal notices to trick users into calling a fake support number or clicking a malicious link.

  • Check the Sender: Legit Norton emails usually come from @norton.com or @lifelock.com. Scammers often use addresses like norton-support@gmail.com or random strings of characters.
  • The “3-Month” Gap: It is highly irregular for a 12-month subscription to expire after only 4 months. Scammers often use a 3–4 month window because users might remember “signing up recently” but not the exact details.
  • Generic Greetings: If the email addresses you as “Dear Customer” or “Valued Member” instead of your name, it is almost certainly a scam.

2. Legitimate Billing Confusion

If the email is actually from Norton, one of the following might be happening:

  • Introductory vs. Renewal Pricing: The $185 amount matches the standard renewal price for Norton 360 with LifeLock Select. When you first sign up, you often get a heavily discounted “Introductory Price” (e.g., $80–$100). The $185 is likely the full price for the next year.
  • Subscription Overlap: You may have had an older trial or a different Norton product active before your December purchase. The email might be referring to that older, separate license rather than the one you bought in December.
  • Pre-Billing Policy: Norton typically charges for automatic renewals 30–45 days before the subscription actually ends to ensure continuous protection. However, March is still too early for a December expiration.

Action Steps: What to do now

Do not click any links or call any phone numbers provided in that email. Instead, follow these steps to verify your status safely:

  1. Log in Manually: Go directly to faviconmy.norton.com in your browser.
  2. Check Subscriptions: Once logged in, click on “My Subscriptions”. This will show you the exact expiration date for every product tied to your email.
  3. Review Billing History: Check the “Billing History” tab to see what you were charged for in December and if there are any pending charges.
  4. Turn Off Auto-Renewal: If you are worried about being charged $185, you can toggle “Auto-Renewal” to OFF in the subscription settings. This ensures no money is taken until you manually decide to renew.
  5. Verify the Email: You can forward the suspicious email to spam@norton.com for their security team to analyze.

Summary Recommendation: If your official Norton dashboard shows an expiration date in December 2026, you can safely delete that email—it is a scam. If the dashboard confirms an April expiration, you should contact faviconOfficial Norton Support to find out why your “one-year” plan was shortened.

===========================

The standalone Norton VPN application and the Norton 360 application are incompatible as separate software installations.

If you have Norton 360 installed, you cannot and should not install the standalone Norton Secure VPN app. The Norton installer will typically block the installation or cause a system error because both programs try to control the same network drivers.

You cannot install the standalone Norton Secure VPN app if Norton 360 is already on your device.

  • Likely Scam: If you bought a 1-year “All-in-One” plan in December 2025, you are covered until December 2026. A demand for $185 in March is almost certainly a phishing attempt.
  • Accidental Double-Subscription: Is it possible you accidentally signed up for a “Standalone VPN” trial separately from your 360 plan? If so, the standalone app is “blocked” because your 360 app is already there.

Recommendation: Do not pay that $185. Go to your official faviconNorton Account, verify your December 2026 expiration date, and if you see a “Standalone VPN” subscription there, cancel it immediately for a refund—you already have it for free inside your Norton 360 app.
