My NIS 2008 subscription expires in 23 days, and I am thinking it would be wise to upgrade to NIS 2009 as the reviews are very positive and the price is about the same as a subscription renewal. I am happy with NIS 2008, but it does temporarily freeze my computer during updates.
Before upgrading to NIS 2009, I would like to know if I should expect conflicts with my following current software:XP SP2; IE 6; Ad-Aware SE Personal (free) Build 1.06 r1 , Spybot – Search & Destroy 1.6.0, and SpywareBlaster ver 4.1. Windows Firewall is disabled.
Questions:
1. Is NIS 2009 compatible with SP2 and SP3?
2. Is NIS 2009 compatible with IE 6 and IE 7?
I prefer to purchase from the Symantec store as a package and not a download. Although I think the download version is the most up-to-date, I assume the CD version’s LiveUpdate will install the recently released updates for NIS 2009.
Thank you, siliconman01, for your post and the information therein.
I always remove all traces of old Norton, exactly as described in your post reply, before installing new. My problem is that I am overly cautious and reluctant to install new software, particularly when all is working well. That said, I have used NAV followed by NIS for many years and have been very happy with the software, and, hopefully, 2009 will follow in the footsteps of its predecessors.

I doubt that you need have Adaware Personal free installed if you use NIS2009 since it monitors cookies and removes the tracking kind. Certainly don't have it running in the background since having two applications doing the same thing is not a good idea!
If you purchase from the Symantec Store as a package to be delivered you will probably get it just about as your old subscription runs out so you won't lose much by installing the new one, if it does not add to the unexpired portion.
You will find with the 2009 versions that you are obliged to create a Norton Account during installation -- this is not a marketing ploy but a useful way of keeping track of your installations (especially if you get the 3 PC version for example).
Ad-Aware Personal does not run in the background -- it runs only when I do a scan. I also have Windows Firewall disabled so it does not interfere with NIS.
Re tracking cookies -- I only keep two cookies in my Temp Internet folder and remove all others several times a day.
Thank you so much for your reply.....I appreciate.
Something weird happened – the red x in my NIS 2008 systray icon has been replaced with a green checkmark. The console shows “secure” and subscription data tells me I have 2 years 16 days remaining.
For the last two weeks, I have been alerted that my first-year-free-with-purchase was to expire in a few weeks which was correct.
It’s all good, but what happened……a Christmas gift???
Did you go and renew and get a 2 year subscription instead of a 1 year?
Otherwise recommend not inspecting teeth of horses received as presents …
Hi huwyngr – I have not yet renewed my NIS 2008 subscription or upgraded to NIS 2009. One or the other had to be done before January 01. Since the cost of upgrading to NIS 2009 with a year’s protection was almost the same as an upgrade to 2009, I believed the upgrade was the thing to do. However, methinks I will now stay with 2008 and take your advice to not look the gift horse in the mouth to inspect his teeth
Are you sure that you were not set up for automatic renewal of your NIS subscription? Check your Norton Account and see if that option was invoked when you renewed the previous time or set up the account. Also check your credit card account and see if you were billed by Symantec.
You can get the NIS 2009 upgrade free of charge and your "gift horse" subscription will carry over to it.

My thanks for your reply.
The first things I checked yesterday were my credit card statements, and there were no charges showing. There is nothing listed in my Norton Account either. I am as sure as one can be that I only opted for the 1-year free subscription when I purchased NIS 2008.
I am going away over the Holidays so the"gift horse" will allow me the extra time to upgrade to 2009 when I return. This will be better for me and less stressful.
I was unaware that the NIS 2009 upgrade was free. How do I manage that and is it available as a download?
Just download a trial version and point it to "Use Existing Key" when it wants to activate. It will force you to open a Norton Account with your subscription details if you do not already have one -- it's not a marketing ploy but a useful feature in my experience.
I strongly recommend using SAVE and not RUN and noting where it saves to so you can run it to install off-line and burn a copy to a CD for safety.
Run Liveupdate a few times after you install until you get a Fully Uptodate message. That version was 16.1.0.33 when I downloaded it yesterday so it should update to 16.2.0.7 shortly.
