/private/var/tmp has hundreds of folder like symantec_error_reportywkKQU

In my mac's /private/var/tmp folder are HUNDREDS of folders like this:

drwx------     5 root      wheel       170 Feb  1 19:55 symantec_error_reportLFvFvL

drwx------     5 root      wheel       170 Feb  1 17:13 symantec_error_reportYj2J0A

drwx------     5 root      wheel       170 Feb  1 14:59 symantec_error_reportWl2fUL

drwx------     5 root      wheel       170 Feb  1 12:58 symantec_error_reportREC91V

drwx------     5 root      wheel       170 Feb  1 11:01 symantec_error_reporti1dEFY

drwx------     5 root      wheel       170 Feb  1 10:08 symantec_error_reportSFoXTD

There appear to be about 12 of these folders generated per day.

Each folder contains files like these:

-rw-r--r--     1 root  wheel  561312 Oct 25 10:50 error_report.xml

-rw-r--r--     1 root  wheel     457 Oct 25 10:50 extensions_profile.xml

-rw-r--r--     1 root  wheel  137388 Oct 25 10:47 system_profile.xml

What is going on here?

These files are not getting purged on reboots.  Are any of these log files important?  Does Symantec need these logs to fix some sort of problem with the application?
