Looks like we spoke too soon - back to "Sorry, An error has occurred on the server."
I just tried & can definitely log into to Norton Family. Not going to try downloading or updating anything yet though....
The old version is still working on my son's laptop ( I tild him not to alllow the update to install) & I can see his browsing history, no problem.
I got access once half an hour ago (I'm from France). It's still back now, but is very very slow. It shows a warning to upgrate to "Premium", which I won't consider (for now) regarding the last events....
We have resolved the database issue. You should be able to login to Norton Family, and the update problems should be resolved.
We do appreciate your feedback and apologize for the inconvenience. If there are any other questions, comments or problems, please post in th Norton Family forum

This is NOT Fixed.
I foolishly believed Norton & tried to re-install Norton Family. Again it completely screwed my PC - and I was forced to do a System Restore, to get the Internet back. Fortunately - thank you to Microsoft, Windows 7 Sysatem Restore worked perfectly. Although, yet agaim - I then had to do a massive (160Mb this time) update to Norton Internet Security.
Norton - How & why is this, OK....?? Do tell, because I can't work it out. Go on, contact me directly to discuss this & to try to fix it for me.....
PS. Norton have now contacted me directly. We shall see what happens.
You have NOT fixed anything!
I just turned on my computer, was able to go online.
I then went straight to the Norton Family icon so that I could set it up and then delete it.
I have never set up Norton Family before, so I'm not sure what email address and password it is asking for... I used the same one I use for my Norton account and for here, but it doesn't work.
Then, my explorer stopped working... I again tried to log into the Norton Family... I recieved an error message stating the the server was temporarily down...
Why do you tie millions of computers ability to go online to something like this?
I never even authorized this or even setup a Norton Family account ... why???????
I've not read any of the above because In am tiring of it.. All I know is that I have switched on (several times and saved) the child minder and can, with ease as though non-existant, enter adult viewing. Maybe it's something I am doing wrong ?
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Norton Family. It fails to let me access the house Rules. I continue to get the following message… Sorry, An error has occurred on the server. Please, try your request again later. An error has occurred with our service, your data is safe, but for your protection and to prevent any possible loss of data your request was halted. The error has been logged and reported and we will look into it shortly. Please return to the home page and log in again. If the problem persists, contact us for assistance. This has been going on for days… What is the problem?
OK - logged in to the portal
On one of the older computers that had been upgraded - was still getting issue where I could not link it up because the name was already in assigned.
So - logged into the portal and managed to stay connected enough (despite the consistent messages about need to upgrade the older computers - which I had alredy done but not been able to register) and DELETED the older computers from the system (under the name of one of my children - which removed it for both - strange and slightly disconcerting but it worked).
The went back to older PC and could finally connect it up to the norton servers and re-assign the server accounts to the local ones. Hopefully, this is a fix for the install at least. There were no issues with my internet browsing from the parent account. Have yet to try the kids as it's late here
I lost my internet access with the latest update as well. My temporary fix (until Symantec gets it resolved) was to remove (uninstall) Norton Family from my computer. To do this I used the "Add or Remove Programs" from the Control Panel in windows. Once removed, restart the computer and you should have internet access again. Unfortunately, you will not be able to monitor your children's computer use. Good Luck.
Am having the similar problems on both my Mac and Windows PC ..... when I logged onto my Norton Family account, I was prompted to download the "new version" but was to no avail.
For the PC, the link provided did not work.
For the Mac, the download was ok but when it prompted me to link to my account name/password, it said it could not be linked.
The "upgrade" is certainly not working flawlessly and Norton needs to provide a quick explanation and solution urgently.
Disappointed!
Even though I was finally able to log in yesterday afternoon, the changes I made within Norton Family via my computer, in Settings, did not take affect for my child's computer despite multiple reboots of that computer. Sites I tried to unblock remained blocked on both Mozilla and Chrome. I had to completely uninstall Norton Family from the child's computer. I will probably be looking for other software. I'm no longer happy with NIS 2012 either - Symantec corrected the footprint of this memory hogging program 2 or 3 years ago and it was running nicely; now it bogs down all processes significantly again every time an update occurs, effectively stopping me from doing anything at all on the computer for one or two minutes instead of seconds. Time to cut the cord with Symantec/Norton.
Add me to the list of users who have experienced the same issues -- especially blocking of internet for supposedly non-monitored admin accounts -- reported in this thread.
Luckily I was able to uninstall Norton Family without incident. I'll keep monitoring these threads to see if Norton gets their act together, but like others have mentioned I'm starting to investigate alternatives...
How did you uninstall? My screen gets stuck on "preparing to uninstall" and nothing else happens.
mm4567 - I uninstalled via the Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs route. I must say I was nervous when clicking uninstall brought up a dialog with the happy dog asking for parent email/password since I had read everyone's horror stories about being stymied at this point. Luck must've been on my side because it accepted my credentials without any issues. The uninstall took several minutes but it did complete.
It might not make a difference but I'm still running XP...
It finally worked for me. It kept cycling me through the download new version to uninstall to invalid password/credentials, too.
What I did was delete the devices, that will stop the recycling. Then, I unplugged from the Internet just after downloading the new version but before the login box popped up. I entered my credentials and it worked...but it was slow to go through the process before deleting the old Norton Online Family software.
Then I downloaded Norton Management. I went through Norton Management to dowload the software and it worked.
In Norton Management, I clicked the Install Products and it brought up the naming box for my computer--I just left the name given for fear of going through the same thing again.
Finally, I went to the icon on the lower right part of my task bar, right clicked Norton Family, and selected Edit Accounts.
Magic...or luck, it now works just fine.
I was quite happy with Norton Security Minder. Now I've updated and...
Well, this update is such a TOTAL MESS that I think Symantec must already be aware of all those issues.
But let me just name few of them (on Windows XP):
- Problems with download
- Problems with install
- Problems with setting already-used computer name
- After a while NF just stops reporting user activity
- NF crashes pretty often
- Probably related to previous one: afer let's say 1 hour work you have 5 or more NF instances running with 5 or more icons in system tray.
Till this last update I liked this piece of software pretty much. But this update made me spelling manufacturer name over and over - how can it be Norton? How can it be Symantec?
I know that things happen, but how on earth can anybody release such untested stuff???
I finally had it with Norton Online Family and Norton's slow response to fix, I was able to finally uninstall the program by doing the following and regained full internet connectivity on my (Sony Laptop Windows 7 Home Premium): :
1) Shut off internet to your affected machine.
2) Restart computer, before windows logo comes up press hold F8, windows will ask to boot into Safe Mode. I went into Safe Mode without networking.
3) Safe mode windows comes up, goto control panel.
4) Select Programs and Featuires. A lis of programs will come up, select Norton Family.
5) Window Box comes up confirming Uninstall, click yes.....voila...it removes the program.
6) Windows box comes up and says you must reboot. Reboot as normal. Turn internet back on.
Full internet connectivity is back. Good riddance Norton Online Family you just lost a customer
