If you have not uninstalled the previous version of Norton product yet, use the Norton Removal:

http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Restart the computer and then install your new version of Norton AntiVirus.

If you are still unable to install and getting messages such as "access denied", I would suggest you to enable the default administrator account in Vista. Due to enhanced security features of Vista, it does not allow access to certain system files for normal user account. Even if the account shows Administrator, it does not have full permissions to all the system files and folders. So enabling the default admin account may help. Read the Microsoft Technet article for detailed steps:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc766343.aspx

Login using this default admin account and then install Norton AntiVirus.

thank you all for the help the removal tool worked

so i got a computer from my brother its about a year old now so relatively new. My college needs an updated antivirus program to access their network and the norton/live update on my brothers doesn't open up, doesn't uninstall, and when i try to go to add/remove programs it tells me that it doesn't exist in the specified path.

So i take it to the people at my school who install their licensed version of norton and when they try to install theirs about 75% of the way through it tells me i can't install because i don't have sufficient privelages on vista. ( i have all that nonsense turned off and in fact admin account is the only account on my computer.)

so my goal is to remove the old broke norton on my pc and install theirs and hope for it to work since i don't have the recovery disks.

if anyone can help i'd appreciate it. i don't no the exact version of norton on the pc.

Try Cleanse Uninstaller it was the only thing I could find that uninstalled norton stuff for me get it here http://www.zardssoftware.com

Use the Norton Removal Tool, which does Remove all Norton Products from your computer.

The LiveUpdate problem: Is that on your computer or another computer...?
