Problem in Mount/Dismount of Ghost Image

Hi

I am using Norton Ghost Version 14 (previously Version 10) and have recently experienced problems in dismounting a mounted drive image in Explorer.

I can mount the image and assign a drive letter and access the contents but when I try to dismount it I get a Mount/Dismount error message that states "Cannot Retrieve Drive Information".  On restart it does dismount the drive.

I also get an error message in Event Viewer relating to V2imount, Category (2), Event 57.

As this has only become a problem very recently I am assuming that it is caused by a recent update to some software; Windows XP SP2 updates, Ad-Aware or Spy-bot perhaps. Can anyone suggest what might be the cause and a possible remedy.

I have AdAware Anniversary Edition and SpyBot S&D Version 1.6.2 installed in addition to my Norton Internet Security 2009.

SpyBot does not run unless I manually use it; AdAware (and AdWatch) is set to run on startup but disabling it makes no difference to the mount/dismount of Ghost virtual drives.  In addition I have also tried disabling NIS (Anti-Virus and Firewall plus disabling Norton Product protection) to no avail.  I have a stand alone utility called Unlocker which suggests there is nothing locking the virtual drive once mounted.

The message I get when trying to dismount a virtual drive and the entry in Event Log are as follows:

The mount/dismount procedure worked perfectly well before I installed NIS2009 (from NIS2008).

I have had extensive contact with Symantec, both online chat and permitting them to access my PC, but did not get a satisfactory answer.

My PC has an Intel Pentium IV Processor (3 GHz). 2 GB RAM and I am using Windows XP Home Edition SP2 (SP3 will not function with my current nVidia Graphics Card/AGP Slot.

To confirm, does the problem go away with NIS uninstalled?

No.

As part of the extensive investigations carried out with Symantec I did uninstall NIS2009, at their request, but the dismount procedure still failed to work.

This problem first occurred when I updated my NIS from 2008 to 2009.  At that time I was using Ghost Version 10.  Updating to Version 14 did not solve the issue.

One thing I have noticed is that if I open Folder Options>File Types for the extension V2I, I see that there are entries for Mount & Open - perhaps their is something about the dismount or unmount function that is lacking.

I have to say that this is not a major concern to me as the virtual drives do disappear after a reboot.  I am just a little concerned that the software isn't working correctly and might not do its recovery job when neeeded in earnest.

I am both surprised and disappointed that nobody is able to offer an explanation as to why this problem occurs and how to resolve the issue.

I have seen this problem as well.

I am running Ghost 12.0 and NIS 2008 on Windows XP SP3.

I tried NIS 2009 and found it to cause the .v2i dismount problems in Ghost 12.0.

The only solution I found was to reinstall an image of Ghost 12.0 with NIS 2008.

There is on other thing you might like to check

double click on a .v2i image file

mount an image with the Symantec recovery point browser

then try to dismount the image

this may give you a error code which may help the techs at Symantec solve the problem.

also you might want to read Norton Antivirus 2009 Does Not Coexist with Norton Ghost 14.0?

Hi

I have tried out your suggestion and also read the thread that you provided the link to but nothing changes.

I can mount an image but when I try to dismount it from within Explorer I don't get an error message, all I get is the "cannot retrieve drive information" message.  The mounted image disappears on reboot.

As I said earlier, it is not a major problem, just annoying that, as has been well documented, these two current applications do not seem to work together properly.

Previous versions of both Ghost and NIS have not presented this problem and I think NIS 2009 is the culprit, rather than Ghost.
