I'm not confusing the KEY. Its 5 groups of 5 characters for a total of 25 characters.
I also assumed that I can't download a trial version of IS 09 and just use that same key. I bet if I did download it, it too woudl expire in 3 days. No?
Thanks,
Steve

If you Downloaded the Trailware of N.I.S., which will be N.I.S. 2009, then you can use your N.I.S. 2008 Product Key to Activate that and, thus, have N.I.S. 2009 on your computer.
Its best to completely uninstall NIS 2008 and then install NIS 2009 and when you do hat you will be prompt top enter your key. Your key, aslong as its valid will work for NIS 2009. Its best to use the Norton Removal Tool if you do not have any other Norton products installed.

I have never used a subscription update online procedure so I don't know how that works but if you have a valid key from the copy of NIS 2008 that you purchased then it should activate NIS2009 when you download it.
If you download NIS2009 as a RUN and not as a SAVE then it will probably install on top of your NIS2008 and take over the settings including the white and black lists for spam (which is why I just installed NIS2009 on top of NIS 2008 on my desktop) and it will take over any unexpired subscription time on the NIS2008.
Then when that runs out you should be able to insert the KEY from the copy you bought and did not install and the NIS2009 should have a year to run.
If by any chance your << I have Norton Internet Security 2008 installed and my subscription expires in 3 days. >> were a free copy installed when you purchased the machine then the new installation may not take over the unexpired 3 days but I'm assuming this is not so.
If you wait 3 days and uninstall your NIS2008 then install NIS2009 by downloading the trial and then use the new NIS2008 KEY you should end up with an activated for a year NIS2009. But then you will lose your settings etc. Some people prefer to have the opportunity to clean up before installing a new version especially since NIS2009 is so different to earlier versions.
It's up to you bearing in mind that you can always clean up and make a clean install if an "on top" leaves you with problems.
Do you have any other Norton applications that you do not want to lose? If so do not use the Norton Removal Tool to clean up since it does not allow you to select what it removes. If you have no other Norton applications and do an on top install you may want to uninstall Symantec Live Update since it is a separate utility for 2008 but built in and operating differently with 2009.
Hi all,
Yeah. That worked. I ran the latest Norton Removal Tool, rebooted my PC, installed IS 2009 trial. It then said I have 3 days left. I clicked on subscriptions/renewals and it gave an option to enter a full 25 character key. So I did. This option was not in the 2008 version, perhaps since it was no a trial.
Now I have 366 days of protection and IS 2009. Cool.
I usually buy a new version (for up to 3 PCs) every year which seems to be cheaper than renewing each PC only. What do most other people do each year?
Thanks to this great group.
Steve
Glad it worked .....
I have three systems on two PCs and I have been using a 3 user NIS 2008 buying the cheapest retail package I can after upgrade rebates etc.
But I also have a copy of N360 running under VISTA so I'm not using all three of the NIS users. I'll probably replace the N360 since I don't use the backup facility.
Your welcome.
My products are all 5 groups of 5 characters and that's what the dialogue accepts.
The problem might be fonts, Steve. If the font used by the installer isn't on your computer, the computer substitutes another font and the fifth character might be there but unreadable.
Alternatively, it is possible that you selected a larger font in order to make writing on your screen more visible. Not all programs modify their display entries to match the size of the font be entered. (AOL is notorious for this.)
Good luck
Thats why its always best to use ctrl-c and ctrl-v. I actually never had to enter my key. I paid for NIS 2009 at the Symantec store and go a download in my email. I actually I think I did but I just copied and pasted it.
Hi, I have Norton Internet Security 2008 installed and my subscription expires in 3 days. I bought, at a retail store, a new copy of Norton Internet Security 2008 with a new key, but I am unable to enter it. Where do I enter it? The Key for the retail version is 5 groups of 5 characters each. It seems that the subscription renewal dialog wants 5 groups of 4 characters. I probably should have bought Norton IS 2009, but shouldn’t I be able to use thsi new key even though the product is the same as I’ve had for the last yeat? thanks, Steve
I've seen references to this problem of differing number of characters and I'm sure there is a simple solution. Unfortunately I can't tell you what it is since I've not encountered it myself.
Hang on for someone who does know how you deal with this.
If you have a valid KEY for NIS2008 from the copy you purchased -- assuming it is a licit copy -- then you can use this key to install and activate the trial copy of NIS2009 that you can download from the Norton website.
But hang on for advice on the KEY -- are you sure you are not confusing a product serial number with the activation KEY which should be printed on the paperwork that came with your NIS2008 purchase.
