About two weeks ago, I received a notice that an upgrade to NIS 2008 was available, so I went through the steps to download and install it.  After installation, I received a notice through NIS that I was not secure as I did not have Anti Virus installed.  In actuality, I had Norton anti virus 2007 running prior to upgrading to NIS 2008.  I was in a hurry and figured I would deal with the dollar issue later, but to be on the safe side, I downloaded and installed Norton Anti Virus 2008.

After I took the above steps, my computer became EXTREMELY slow through a boot up operation.  I mean it went from a boot up process of a bout a minute to now one that takes betwee five and ten minutes from the time I start the machine to the point where I can use it.  For about six or more of those minutes, it is simply sitting there as if nothing is happening.

What the heck happened to my machine?  I noticed from some other messages here that I did not uninstall either NIS or AV prior to installing the new versions, could this be the problem/  By the way, the machine is running Vista and is about a year old and has been running very well prior to this change in software.

Thanks

Bill

Okay, I downloaded the recommended program and ran it.  However, the boot up problem still persisted.

Is everything else working okay, i.e. is everything Secure?

NIS doesn't have a notice saying that anti-virus is not installed. It sounds like you ran into some bad timing. I suspect that you ran into the misleading application called AntiVirus 2008 and installed this malware when it prompted you.

Read the Symantec writeup about Antivirus2008 to see if this might actually be the issue. You can find removal instructions on the Removal tab of that page as well.

It seems to me that it has been a bad install; use the Norton Removal Tool and let us know how you get on.

The N.R.T. will un-install all Versions and Products of Norton, although, after you re-start from using the N.R.T., you get to re-install your Norton Security Product.
