THANKS Phil_D for your help!!! :smileywink:

1) I had NIS 2008 already installed and I run NIS2008 setup without prior uninstalling 2008.

2009 is uninstalled the previous version and then installed the new one (after reboot).

I tried also a complete uninstallation and an installation from a scratch, but without any visible difference.

2) Yes I'm running LU in a daily basis.

3) Product scan, didn't found any errors.

* I had this issue once with NIS 2008, but after downloading and  running the manually updater (a suggestion that I read here, at the forum) I didn't had it again.

Unfortunately, the updater couldn't help me with NIS 2009! :smileysad:

THANKS AGAIN for your help!!!  :smileywink:

Hi Elf_Wizard,

Do you have any other Norton Products installed in conjunction with NIS 2009 such as NSW, Save & Restore, etc?

If you are using NIS 2009 ONLY, then please go to Windows Add-Remove Programs and check if you see Symantec LIve Update and / or Live Update Notifier.

These items are not needed by NIS 2009 and if present should be uninstalled; but uninstall ONLY if you use NO OTHER NORTON PRODUCTS.

Indeed I had NSR installed but I have uninstalled it and I can’t see any references to old LU versions. No add-remove entry, no control panel icon!

Meanwhile, I installed it to a fresh copy of xp sp3, but the problem remains!  :smileysurprised:

Maybe some incombatibility with my hardware.

I'm thinking to give 360 a try.

Elf_Wizard,

I'd like to try to understand the issue you've encountered a little better.

1) Does this issue occur only while you are using the computer, when it is "idle", or both?

2) When you launch the "CPU Usage" dialog while this is happening, does it show any background tasks as running?

3) When you disconnect from the internet (unplug network cable?) the problem goes away?

4) If you reconnect to the internet, does the problem return?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike! :smileyhappy:

1) It's happening only when I'm online.

Sometimes after an update, sometimes when downloading,  sometimes when another program using the connection (eg. the azureus client).

2) It shows this file taking the most of 100% of cpu. There are always other programs running when I'm online (and they are active). Obviously NIS trying to control their access to the net. The most common of theserunning programs her, are firefox and azureus. Some rare times are emule, free download manager and orbit.

3) I'm connecting through ethernet port to the router. For  dissconectin, I'm right-clicking at tray->disable.

After the dissconection, the cpu is returning immediatelly  at normal use (without unloading any program from memory)..

4) After reconnection the problem not autoreappearing.  It is happening at random times only.

I hope this described my problem a little better. If I missed something, pleased tell me. :smileyhappy:

Elf_Wizard,

Thanks for the additional info.  To clarify question #2, I meant do any "Background Tasks" appear as "Running" or highlighted in orange on the CPU Usage dialog (screenshot below) when this issue occurrs?  You can open this dialog by launching NIS, then clicking "CPU Usage" on the left side of the screen.

Regards,

Mike

I can’t see something there, but please let me 2-3 days, for looking at it more thoroughly.

Hi!  :smileyhappy:

I have a problem with  ccsvchst.exe.

At random times, stacks my cpu at 100% and the only solution is to disconnect from internet.

Has someone else got this problem?

Actually, I saw some suggestions  at other threats but none of them solved the problem. :smileysad:

I'm using NIS 2009 at XP pro Eng. x86 SP3 (and I hadn't this issue with NIS2008). :smileyindifferent:

THANKS!!! :smileyhappy:

You were right!

Seems like "phising protection updates" and "norton community watch", are the orange background jobs.

Elf_Wizard,

When the CPU hits 100%, how long do you wait before disconnecting the network?  If you don't disconnect the network, how long does the issue persist?  There's a known issue with "Phishing Protection Updates" where it can consume 100% CPU for a minute or two in some cases when processing new definitions.

Regards,

Mike

At past, after waiting ~5min at max. I was disconnecting.

This time, after ~30sec,  phising updates are ready. After additional 15secs, community watch was ready too and cpu felt to normal levels.

All this (~45sec) process was at online mode (without a need for disconnection).

Hi Elf_Wizard,

1) How did you install NIS 2009?  Did you do an over-top install or did you uninstall NIS 2008 first?

2) Have you manually "Run Live Update" to be sure you have the latest definitions and updates? If not, please run it until no more updates are available.

3) Have you tried the automated product scan?

You can try "One Click Support" which will perform an automated scan of your Norton Product to determine if there are any issues.

Go to "Help & Support" in the main Norton window. Then select "One Click Support".

After the interface loads, click "Begin Support Session".

This will scan your Norton Product to check for any issues.

Let us know how you do.
