Problem with NIS 20 & 21 and Windows 8.1

I installed Windows 8.1 on my Sony Ultrabook. I had been using NIS 2013 on it previously (with Windows 8) and everything worked great but now NIS versions 2013 and 2014 are slowing down my computer so much that it is unusable and also I get an error when trying to shut down that says something to the effect of nis.exe is stopping this computer from shutting down. It also takes NIS forever to load and I cannot connect to the internet through my wireless when NIS is installed. When I use the Norton Removal tool to remove NIS, all the problems clear up. Has anyone else been having these problems with NIS and the final release of Windows 8.1? Thanks in advance for any insights/help you can provide ... I just bought a 5 user license for NIS 2013.

Hi,

If you didn't uninstall NIS or temporarily disabled it's components there are chances that NIS became corrupted.

Try to uninstall NIS, download the Norton Removal Tool, run it twice with reboot each time, then download from your Norton account a fresh pre-activated copy and install it.

Let us know if the strange behavior is fixed or persists and go to Windows Event Viewer and see what kind of start-up errors you have if any.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

I already have uninstalled with Norton Removal tool and reinstalled a couple of times and I still experience the same behavior. The only thing I haven't done that you suggest is to download a copy from my account. I will try that and get back to you. Thanks.

Hi VMP,

When you reinstall NIS go to Settings section Network and initialize the NIS Network component.

Does this operation finishes successfully?

I suppose that you do not have any other Security software with real-time modules enabled.

If you are getting errors at shutdown with nis.exe go to Event Viewer or whatever is now called in 8.1 and see what type of events you get with Event ID's from 201 to 209.

Please report back.

Thanks.

Regards,

OK, I ran the Norton Removal Tool twice, then downloaded a clean copy of NIS from my account. I installed it (21.1.0.18 previously I had installed 21.1.0.0) and everything seemed to be working fine at first. I went into Settings/Network and was able to initiate my wireless network successfully. I restarted several times and there were none of the previous symptoms. But then I changed some firewall settings, turned off Auto Program Monitoring and turned on Advanced Component Monitoring then I got this error when I shut down the computer: "The instructions at 0x6ce35f46 referenced memory at 0x0000000, the memory can't be read, click OK to terminate program." And then the symptoms came back on restart ... computer slow, NIS taking forever to start up and show in System Tray (I tried to open NIS, it wouldn't start manually) and I was having wireless problems on and off. So I ran the removal tool 2x again and am going to reinstall to see if the problem starts after I make changes to NIS's default configuration. In the past with Windows 7 and 8, I've always turned off Auto Program Monitoring and turn on Advanced Monitoring.

I don't have any other security programs on the computer. Thanks again for your help.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I also changed my Network Trust Level from Protected to Restricted and I also set boot level protection to on (not agressive).

Edit2: In the Event Viewer under Applications there are no IDs #201-209

Well after changing the program control setting off and turning on Advanced Monitoring on and giving access to non-admins I get all the bad symptoms again. This is so weird, it works fine for a while and then after some configuration it's messed up again. HELP! The reason I use NIS instead of Windows firewall is the outbound protection : ( I used Norton Removal Tool again and back to normal.

Hi VMP,

There is nothing wrong with your pc, the problem is that when you turn off Auto Program Monitoring and turned on Advanced Component Monitoring, then NIS doesn't behave well.

Some users have reported this issue too.

NIS is designed for automatically monitoring your programs and your inbound & outbound connections that's the reason you want it for.

I recommend that you turn ON Auto Program Monitoring and if you want some customizations you can go to NIS Smart Firewall and create the rules that meet your needs.

Let me know if after revering your changes everything works properly.

If your issue is resolved, you can accept this post as a solution so other users can benefit.

Hope this helps your understanding,

Regards,

I would like to keep Auto Program Monitoring off and Advanced Monitoring on so that I can monitor possible suspicious behavior, this is how I have used NIS successfully with other Windows OSes. Will this issue be fixed in future updates of NIS? Like I said, the outgoing protection is why I use NIS instead of the Windows firewall. I don't have a clue how to create rules, for instance that keep certain things from listening for connections from other computers ... I appreciate your help but this won't really be resolved until it is fixed : )  I had to use the Norton Removal Tool again and reinstall NIS, just reversing the changes didn't fix things. Thanks so much for your help.

Hi VMP,

You can always switch back to NIS 2013 until a latest update of NIS 2014 resolves your issue and test.

As you said, all worked properly with NIS 2013 version and you could be able to customize NIS settings without affecting your system's performance.

Hope this helps,
