I am having difficulties getting into Safari and it takes quite a few attempts before I succeed. The pop-up says" Safari quit unexpectedly while using the WCIDEngine plug-in" The path is Library/Application Support/Symantec/WebFraud/WCIDEngine.bundle/contents/MacOS/WCIDEngine and the report later includes the information: "error for object 0x11c3b9a50 incorrect checksum for freed object - object was probably modified after being freed". What does all this mean? Is this a Symantec problem? What can I do? Should I uninstall Norton? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your assistance Lee G. I have just done the latest live update but I still can't get into Safari for the same reasons.
I guess you can't get to the Safari version on its About box, but if you do a "Get Info" on Safari (in the Applications folder), it should tell you the version. That may not help, but it may be relevant.
Version 5.0.3 (6533.19.4)
Does this problem only happen when visiting certain Web sites or does it happen immediately when you launch Safari? If it happens when you launch Safari, do you have a home page set (that is, does Safari try and load a Web site as soon as you launch it?)
If it happens immediately when you launch Safari, then try removing the following file (make sure Safari is not running first):
/Library/Application Support/Symantec/WebFraud/wcid.dat
You can remove this file by opening a new window in the Finder, and selecting "Go to Folder" from the Go menu. Then copy & paste that path into the window, and dragging the wcid.dat file to the Trash. You will be asked to enter your username and password. Enter it and then restart your Mac. You will receive the "Error encountered' toolbar, which is expected. LiveUpdate should download and re-install your definitions the next time it checks for updates.
Let me know if that fixes the problems.

I think I may have solved the problem thanks to you Mr McGann. i was not able to do what you said to the dat file because the computer said I didn't have permission, but your advice made me think that the problem could be happening when Safari tried to launch the website (it seemed to get stuck half way on the URL). I reset the website and it worked first time, so hopefully I won't have the problem anymore. Thank you very much for your assistance. I guess it wasn't a Norton problem and I am sorry I distracted you from more important work.
Actually, no matter what happens, our products should never crash! So I am curious—if you don't mind sharing—what Web site was Safari loading? Even if the problem was resolved I'd still like to make sure that we never cause Safari to crash.
Glad to help,
Ryan
Safari was loading the BigPond website (my wireless carrier). I don't know which BigPond URL was set previously, but I have now set (re-set?) it to the BigPond home page of http://go.bigpond.com/home/index.jsp.
I hope that helps.
No, it is not the answer. I am still having the problem. I will have to talk to Apple I think.
After trying to get on Safari I keep getting "Safari won't open per WDCIEngine Plug-in". By speaking with the iMAC techs we've had this problem for a couple of weeks and spoken to three iMAC techs and we've been able to narrow the problem down to Norton. I now can use Safari, but the only way I can now open Safari is to totally disable my Norton Anti-virus software for my iMac. I'd like this solved as I bought the Anti-virus software and now am unable to use it. My tech told me that Ryan has been working on this same problem. And he gave me this link in order for me to post my similar problem. Please help me solve this.
Sorry for the problems.
First, I am guessing you must have Norton Internet Security. Norton AntiVirus doesn't include this component. If you have this component but don't have Norton Internet Security, then your installation is obviously corrupted, probably from a previous install you did. But Im going to guess that's not the case, and you do indeed have Norton Internet Security.
Second, can you give us more information about your Mac, like what kind of Mac you have (is it a PowerPC or an Intel-based Mac, is it an iMac or a Mac Pro, etc.) and what version of Mac OS X are you running (is it Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard", etc.).
Finally, we'll need the crash information.
1. In the Finder create a new window. Then choose "Go to Folder" from the Go menu.
2. Copy and paste the following:
~/Library/Logs
3. Press the Go button.
4. Look for a folder called DiagnosticReports. If you don't find one, look for a folder called CrashReports. If you find DiagnosticReports, open it, otherwise open CrashReports.
5. Find the files that begin with "Safari" and look for one that was created recently.
6. Copy that folder to the Desktop so you can find it easily later.
7. Rename that file so that it ends with ".txt" instead of ".log".
7. On the forms here, reply to my message and attach that file you copied to the Desktop.
This will help us determine what's going on better.
Thanks,
Ryan
Following my earlier comments on this thread and because I am still having problems with Safari, I spoke to an Apple expert who tells me that this is a problem with the Symantec plug-in. Can you help me at all or should I uninstall Norton Anti-Virus? I don't really want to do that. I am now using Firefox which works fine, but I would rather use Safari because it is part of the AppleMac package.
If you follow Ryan's instructions from the previous post, do you see any crash logs?
I have found the crash reports and put them on the desktop but I can’t seem to get them in to the text of this reply. If you give me a specific email address I think it will let me mail them to you.
Try this.
Does the problem still occur when launching Safari, and have you tried changing Safari so that it doesn't try to open any Web sites when you launch it? It sounded like that had fixed the problem before.
If the problem doesn't happen when opening Safari, then does it occur on all Web sites or only certain Web sites?
Thanks,
Ryan
I have changed Safari so that it doesn't try to open a web page. What happens now is that Safari starts up, but when I key in ANY site, it crashes (with the same crash report).
No sorry I misled you. Safari, on its own, without having a web page, doesn't start up and crashes. Eventually, after many tries, it will start up and everything is fine after that. I will just have to use Firefox as a browser.
I would like your advice please on how to uninstall Norton. Is it merely a matter of pressing the uninstall button? I am afraid that I am completely disenchanted with Norton for Mac. Everything was going fine until I loaded it. Now I have a browser that is useless and an INFURIATING, pointless message that pops every time I connect through Skype, cutting off the conversation at the crucial opening and during the conversation. I just cannot understand why someone who has no business with me would want to access my computer through Skype and why I should have to decide, other than for the purpose of regaining the conversation link, whether this unknown person should have access and to what. I am sorry, I have lost my patience.
