Problem with sub-domains

Hi, I have come across another issue with certain sub-domains on an allowed domain.

The url identity.barton.ac.uk gets blocked because its in the Uncategorized category, which is blocked. I can add the domain to the Specific Web sites to allow list (either from the activity list or directly in the settings section). However the site still get blocked.

Interestingly there is another sub-domain (home.barton.ac.uk) on the same site that is in the "Reference/Education" category (which I have allowed access to) and that works without issue.

I have also tried to add the higher level domain barton.ac.uk to the allow list, but this does not work either.

Both sub-domains belong to a college http://www.barton-peveril.ac.uk/, where my son studies (allegedly!) .

Hi dnorrishill,

Please add "barton.ac.uk" in the whitelist and see if that helps. The Web site identity.barton.ac.uk is inaccessible, so I am not able to test it out for you.

Thanks,

Katie

Katie, thanks for the response.

I have tried to add all variants (all to no avail):

  • barton.ac.uk on its own
  • identity.barton.ac.uk on its own
  • both identity.barton.ac.uk and barton.ac.uk

To access the site you actually need to go to home.barton.ac.uk and the site will auto-redirect to identity.barton.ac.uk

Thanks, David.

dnorrishill,

If you allow the Uncategorized category, it should solve the issue here by unblocking Uncategorized.

Thanks,

Katie

OK don't want sound funny, but surely the point of a whitelist is to allow sites from blocked categories to be accessed. By saying unblock the category misses the point. What happens if a site is an educational establishment and it gets mistakenly categorised as porn (which actually happened to me a few days ago) - are you suggesting that I unblock porn because the whitelist system is not working?

dnorrishill,

I tried to access each of the following sites and none of them was accessible.  Please tell me if these Web sites are hosted on custom ports.

home.barton.ac.uk

barton.ac.uk

identity.barton.ac.uk on

Thanks,

Katie

Katie, can you access http://www.barton-peveril.ac.uk/ and then click on the intranet link on the top menu?

Also the identity.barton.ac.uk site does run on port 8080.

Many thanks, David.

Hmmm I wonder if there is some sort of country specific filter on their site. I can definately access it and infact you screenshot showed that it had redirected to the domain and port (plus a whole lot of other parameters on the end of the url). This may also be the reason that OnlineFamily.Norton does not recognise the sub-domain as valid?
