Problem with "windows cannot find" error

 Vista 32bt FireFox 3.5.5 NIS2010

When clicking an HTML link on desktop i get this error message "windows cannot find (whatever)" while using FireFox and FireFox immediately opens the page over top of the error message.

This problem never happened before the unfortunate simultaneous updates by both FireFox and Norton on about Oct 26th.

I was not aware of the issues with the Norton update and compatibility with FireFox 3.5.4. With FireFox crashing Norton safe search gone and only IE working i assumed a possible corrupted download and did a system restore to two weeks previous system checkpoint (disabled tamper proof to get system restore to work)

When the restore finished and rebooted i had no NIS 2010 anywhere, no icons. I found my original Norton set up program in my downloads and ran it. Norton started downloading, then stopped and went into uninstall, then started downloading again and finished, my protection was back. Safe search did not show up however.

I have Safe search and Norton IP back now but the "windows cannot find" issue continues in FireFox. I have disabled all add ons in FireFox and it does not help, FireFox does not display the problem in safe modeI am not comfortable editing the registry which seems to be a possible fix.

I am a bit lost here and would appreciate any help or suggestions, thanks!
