Problems with installation on android 11 device

Just downloaded Norton 360 and all went well except for this error message which I cannot work around…”Allow Norton 360 Service to have full control of your device”. When I select OK it then comes up with “As an app has blocked the permission request interface, the “settings” app cannot verify your responses. Turn off Assistive Ball (which I have done) or other functions that might cause this issue”.

I have been all through my settings disabling anything that interfere and still cannot get past this issue.

I’d be grateful if anyone has a fix for this

N.B. Norton chatbox useless… and couldn’t find anything on youtube & google for this specific topic.

Hello @user9935
Data vs WiFi = same issues??

The error message “As an app has blocked the permission request interface…” on Android is a security feature designed to prevent malicious apps from tricking you into granting them sensitive permissions. It occurs when an app with screen overlay permissions (drawing over other apps) is active while you are trying to grant a critical permission, such as full control via Accessibility settings.

Since you have already turned off “Assistive Ball” and are still facing the issue, another app is likely interfering.

Potential Culprit Apps
Other functions or apps that commonly cause this issue include:

  • Screen dimming apps (e.g., Twilight, f.lux, or the built-in “Eye Comfort Shield” or “Night Light” features).
  • “Blue light filter” apps.
  • Floating widgets or “Chat Heads” (like those from Facebook Messenger, some system monitors, or even certain phone utilities).
  • One-handed mode or similar system accessibility features (other than Assistive Ball).
  • Third-party screen recording tools that have drawing permissions.
  • Apps that require “Display over other apps” or “Draw over other apps” permissions.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Disable all other apps with “Display over other apps” permission:
  • Go to your phone’s Settings.
  • Search for “Display over other apps” or “Draw over other apps” (the exact name varies by phone manufacturer and Android version). This setting is usually under Apps & notifications > Special app access.
  • Go through the list and temporarily disable this permission for all apps that have it enabled, or at least for any app that might be running in the background.
  1. Turn off all screen filters/dimmers:
  • If you have a blue light filter or screen dimmer app, manually exit it or disable its service.
  • Check your phone’s built-in quick settings panel for options like “Eye Comfort Shield,” “Night Light,” or “Extra Dim” and turn them off temporarily.
  1. Boot into Safe Mode (if the above doesn’t work):
  • Booting your phone into Safe Mode temporarily disables all third-party apps. This confirms if a third-party app is the cause.
  • The process for Safe Mode varies by device, but usually involves pressing and holding the power button, then pressing and holding the “Power off” option until a “Reboot to Safe Mode” prompt appears.
  • In Safe Mode, try to grant the Norton 360 permission. If it works, a third-party app is definitely the issue.
  1. Re-attempt Norton 360 setup:
  • After disabling potential culprits, go back to the Norton 360 app and attempt to grant the “full control” (Accessibility) permission again.
  1. Contact Norton Support or the device manufacturer:
  • If the issue persists, the problem might be a specific interaction with your phone’s operating system version (e.g., Android 11, which has had similar reports). In this case, reaching out to Norton support for device-specific guidance might be necessary.

Once you have successfully granted the permission to Norton 360, you can usually re-enable your screen dimmer or floating app permissions without problems, as the sensitive permission request interface will not be active anymore.

Installation problems with Norton 360 on an Android 11 device typically stem from permission conflicts, app compatibility issues, or basic app installation glitches.

Common Problems and Solutions

  1. Permission Conflicts (“As an app has blocked the permission request interface”)
This is a specific, common issue on certain Android devices, where another app interferes with the permission prompts.
  • Symptom: You see a message like “As an app has blocked the permission request interface, the ‘settings’ app cannot verify your responses” when trying to grant permissions.
  • Solution:
    • Disable “Draw over other apps” or “Assistive Ball” features: Go through your device’s settings and disable any functions that might be overlaying the screen, such as screen dimmer apps, assistive menus (like “Assistive Ball”), or blue light filters.
    • Once these features are off, attempt to grant the required permissions again within the Norton 360 app setup.
  1. App Incompatibility or Google Play Store Issues
While Android 11 should be a supported version (Norton officially supports Android 10.x or later), sometimes the Play Store incorrectly flags a device as incompatible, or there’s a temporary glitch.
  • Symptom: The Google Play Store says “This app is no longer compatible with your device” or the “Install” button is not available.
  • Solution:
    • Directly use the Play Store: Go to the Google Play Store on the Android 11 device directly and search for the Norton 360 app, rather than pushing the installation from your Norton account website.
    • Clear Play Store Cache and Data: Go to Settings > Apps > Google Play Store > Storage, then tap Clear Cache and Clear Data. Restart your device and try again.
    • Update Google Chrome and Android System WebView: Ensure both of these system apps are updated to their latest versions from the Play Store, as they can impact app functionality.
  1. General Installation Failures
For general issues where the installation doesn’t complete or the app keeps stopping.
  • Symptom: Installation taking a long time, stopping responding, or the app immediately crashing after installation.
  • Solution:
    • Ensure Sufficient Storage: Verify your device has enough free storage space for the app to install and run properly.
    • Check Internet Connection: A stable Wi-Fi or mobile data connection is required for successful installation and license verification.
    • Temporarily Disable Other Security Software/VPNs: Third-party security apps can sometimes conflict with the Norton installation. Temporarily disable or uninstall them before installing Norton 360.
    • Restart the Device: A simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches.
    • Uninstall and Reinstall: If the app partially installed or appears blank, uninstall it completely, restart your device, and reinstall it from the Play Store.

If these steps fail to resolve the problem, it is recommended to contact Norton Support directly, as they can provide specific guidance and access higher levels of technical assistance.

Norton 360 requires several significant permissions to provide comprehensive security and parental control features. These permissions allow the app to monitor device activity, identify threats, and enforce rules.
Below are the primary permissions Norton 360 needs and the reasons behind them:

Accessibility Service: Required for enhanced monitoring of web activities and app usage to detect and warn about fraudulent websites (Safe Web), potentially risky apps (App Advisor), and prevent unauthorized uninstallation of the app.

Device Administrator: This is a critical permission used to prevent the app from being easily uninstalled without proper authorization, which is essential for parental control features to be effective.

Display over other Apps: Allows Norton to display critical warning messages or blocking screens over other applications when a security risk is detected, such as when attempting to access an unsafe website.

App Usage Access: Required for monitoring application usage times and behavior, which is essential for the time supervision and app supervision features within Norton Family.

Location: Used for location tracking features in Norton Family to help locate the child’s device, and also for Wi-Fi Security features to detect and alert you about unsafe or unsecured Wi-Fi networks.

Phone/Contacts: Allows the app to access phone-related data, which can be necessary for features like enabling emergency contacts in the parental control settings during restricted times.

Run in background: Ensures that Norton 360 can run continuously in the background to provide real-time protection, scanning for threats and monitoring activity without interruption.

Notifications: Allows the app to send you alerts and notifications regarding security risks, app updates, and house rules updates.

Storage (Photos/Media/Files): Allows the app to scan files on your device for malware and other threats.

Norton requires these extensive permissions to effectively provide its range of security features. If these permissions are not granted, the app’s functionality will be limited, or it may not work at all.

Turn off all accessibility or floating features (like Assistive Ball), restart your phone, then reopen Norton 360 and try again. If it still fails, reinstall Norton 360 after rebooting.

Thank you - it appears the problem has been resolved!
