Periodically when I click on a link, I get a red background page warning
Reported Attack Page!
This web page at <website> has been reported as an attack page and has been blocked based on your security preferences.
I am presented with two buttons
“Get me out of here!” and “Why was this page blocked?”
First complaint: I think this warning is coming from Norton Internet Security. Why doesn’t it say so?
Second complaint: Norton Safe Web browser toolbar is inconsistent.
While I am glad the Norton Internet Security product blocked me from going to a harmful website, the browser safe web tool bar says the website is safe (this was the website's parent main page)! So the Norton products are inconsistent since it blocks the page (NIS), but says it is safe (Safe Web). Safe web reports on the website, while the warning was on a specific web page.
When I get the red background warning page, I click on “Why was this page blocked?”, it displays information from Google. The information is not from Norton.
Third complaint: Norton Safe Web Google search is incorrect.
I copied the title of the article from the suspect site’s main page and did a search with Google.
The Google search results had a link to the problem webpage. While there was a green OK Norton icon, Google had a link just below noting “This site may harm your computer.”
Fourth complaint: the https://safeweb.norton.com/ website does not report a problem with the suspect website
In summary, I found that Norton Internet Security does block the problem web page, but following Safe Web products don’t give me confidence.
- Norton Safe Web browser tool bar
- Norton Safe Web website https://safeweb.norton.com/
- Google search results with the integrated Norton rating
Is Symantec aware of these problems?
Is there any reason to enable the browser safe web feature?
