OK - Update

After starting a manual "Live-Update" the pulse updates are back - very weird. Perhaps it has something to do with certain (full-screen) apps which prevent the pulse update to do its job (My PC runs since 7 hours now).

If you have the "Full Screen Detection" setting enabled, Norton Internet Security 2009 will automatically suspend background activities like idle scans and updates until you exit the full screen application.

If you regularly use full screen applications this could be why the updates seem to happen very sporadic.

I’m using XP with default NAV 2009 setting. The pluse update runs fine. But the Liveupdate seems will not run at all. Sometimes after booting into XP next day, the Def shows is 1 day old. I checked the folder and see that the def is old, but inside the stream def file is updated, and continue to update, it proves the pulse update is working. But how come that the pulse update is cking but won’t check liveupdate as old version do? Even after system is started over1.5 hr, the def still shows 1 day old. Previous version will livete def about 15 minutes after system start, but 2009 just won’t. It is confusing as the UI show old def but pulse update works behind, user does not know if actual def is old or not, and does the stream def covers the real liveupdate def or not. There is no option to set the liveupdate inteterval as old versions do, so no way to know how often liveupdate def or will it update missed scheduled update or not at next system start.

Hi, you can visit the above link.   It regards to Idle timings for Pulse LiveUpdates.

I found out the reason why sometimes it takes 5 mins to update while other time it takes hrs.  It is all in the connection.

On one PC, my internet connection is not always on.  I have to manually click in order to connect to internet.  As a result of this, the Pulse Update is "not updated" and users will need to be logged into the internet for a while (ie:- at least Liveupdated had ran).  After LiveUpdate has run, Pulse Update will proceed normally.

Other PC which is always connected to the internet, does not have this problem.

If you keep your connection on (even if you're not using the internet) you'll noticed that Pulse and LiveUpdate will function concurrently.

Thank you.

Another pulse update error:

a pulse update doens’t have to be every 10 minutes. It will only be when you really need a update. There is no use in pulse update if there is no update but it is more usefull when a update is needed for example after 4 or 5 minutes

Hi :smileyhappy:

Today... Pulse Updates - Have been misbehaving for me too :smileysad:

They weren't working properly last week... When I first installed - NIS 09

They were constantly - Hit & Miss ... In those first few days :smileysurprised:

Then.... The last few days - Pulse Updates have worked absolutely fine :smileyhappy:

Today.... Hit & Miss ... Again! :smileymad:

Earlier this afternoon ... Pulse Updates - 1 Hour

I Shutdown My Laptop

Started The Laptop Back Up

And Later...

When I Checked.... Pulse Updates - 2 Hours

So...

I Ran Live Update

And....

3 Things Were Updated

Don't ask me what... I Don't Know!

I'm still finding my way around - NIS 09 :smileyhappy:

Still Scared I'll Break It!

If I Click On the Wrong Thing  :smileysurprised:

Don't Laugh!

N360 v2 ... Clicked - Network Map .... Broke!

Oh yeah!

The other day when I ran Live Update myself.... Pulse Updates still said 2 Hours  :smileysurprised:

But Today... Pulse Updates started counting again :smileyindifferent:

Also....

Even though my laptop isn't always ON

I Have Got An - Always ON ... Internet Connection

So when the Laptop is - ON - So is the Internet

The only thing I can think of....

My new laptop came with a very odd Internet habit :smileysad:

Basically....

When I Start Up the Laptop .... It takes well over a minute to connect to the Internet  :smileysurprised:

Once it's connected to the Internet ... The laptop has a really strong connection :smileyvery-happy:

I know it's not NIS 09 causing this delayed connection problem.

However!

Because of this delayed Internet connection....

When the laptop first turns - ON ( Desktop Loaded )

The NIS 09 Sidebar Gadget - Has a spinning circle of dots on it... Until my laptop connects to the Internet :smileysad:

Only once I have an Internet connection....

Does my NIS 09 Sidebar Gadget Say - Secure

And my NIS 09 Taskbar Icon - Show Up!

:smileysad:

Thanks! :smileywink:

It's almost five hours since last update. I have even rebooted.

I have feeling that I have to run LiveUpdate once manually after reboot or hibernate. After that pulse updates seem to work. It is a bit worrying that I have to constantly watch myself if updates are working.

Zana,

I wanted to check whether you have problems if you first make sure you are strongly connected to the internet (you use your web browser and can rapidly move to different sites), then run manual LiveUpdate right after that.

This might help indicate whether the issue is related to how your laptop handles the internet connection.

Hi Christopher :smileyhappy:

I've got - No Problems... Surfing the web :smileysurprised:

And...

I've got - No Problems ...  Running Live Update Manually :smileywink:

It's just that... When I First Start Up My Laptop....

My Internet connection takes over a minute to connect :smileysad:

However!

Once My Laptop Has Connected To The Internet... The Connection Is - Fantastic!  :smileyvery-happy:

Wireless Connection ... 99%

Download Speed ( Average ) ... 4Mbps

On The Odd Occasion That... Pulse Updates Fail To Work! :smileysad:

If I Manually Run Live Update....

Pulse Updates Seem to Start Working Again :smileyhappy:

Sometimes... Straight Away!

Sometimes... A Few Minutes Later!

Thanks! :smileywink:

We have identified an issue with the UI not updating the "last update time" with pulse updates, even though they are actually working normally. To verify the actual time of the last pulse update, look in

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\Norton\Definitions\VirusDefs (XP) or C:\Program Data\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\Norton\Definitions\VirusDefs

In the numeric subdirectory under that (looking like "20080924.003"), look at the last modified time of streamset.dat.

Stu, i am NOT saying there must be a pulse update every whatever period, it IS the time DIFFERENCE in the main UI and the “streamset.dat” last change time stamp, at UI the last update time is: 2008-9-24 22:34:38 , while at the Explorer.exe it shows 2008-9-24 22:49, so how come? is the counting in UI different from the Explorer? What is the meaning of “Definition update: xxxxxxx ago” ?? how is it counted/measured? Does it mislead users?
