Hi jjfw42,
Since you cannot retrieve your Norton product key from your Norton account, you can chat for free with Symantec Customer Support at the link below; they will be able to retrieve the product key for you and also explain why your Norton product is not listed in your account:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/contact/contact.jsp?pvid=cs
Please tell us how it goes - thanks :-)
PS: I strongly recommend upgrading to NIS 2010. You will have to purchase NIS 2010, but you will have the latest security; NIS 2005 is rather old and cannot keep up with today's threat landscape.
Very many thanks for your reply Yaso_Kuuhl.
I followed your advice and linked to the 'live chat' facility. They told me that they didn't keep product keys for pre-installed versions of NIS, but as I was a customer they offered me a free upgrade to NIS2010. The whole session took about twenty minutes once I'd logged in, it was downloaded live over the connection while I watched. The technician was very polite too!
Companies like Symantec often take a pasting on fora but I can honestly say that I have only ever had good experience of their customer support, and that is why I remain loyal to their product.
I don't think I could have anticipated such a good outcome to this enquiry in such a short timescale!
Hi jjfw42,

Hi
Please follow the Instructions in here and let us know how it goes.
One small addition to what Subash said.
For that suggestion to work, you have to make sure you have Norton Management installed on all the computers you want to control.
Hi Peterweb
If you follow my suggestion it doesnt require the installation of Norton Management. If it is installed it'll be more helpful to manage the Norton on that machine from a Remote location and also the License removal can be done in that way also. It's all made easy with the Management website modifications, because of these modifications the End Users now have more contrrol over their license. Check the Pic below.
Subash - with all due respect (as I have been wrong before ), your screen shot shows that you are logged into Norton Management (as shown in the top left corner) and have selected the "My Account" tab (as grayed item).
If you open a Norton Product and go to My Acccount - the trash can is not shown anywhere.
Please inform me of the error of my ways? It is not that I doubt you - perhaps I am just doing something wrong(different) to see things the same as you do.
Thanks Yank for confirming what I was seeing. In Norton Account there does not seem to be any way to manage your PC's.
Hi Yank/Peterweb
When you click on the Account Option in the GUI it'll bring up the Mynortonaccount. The 'Dustbin' icon can be found only in the My Account tab in the Management Website. If the Norton Management is Installed in your Computers it'll give additional benefits like hecking the status on the machines under your account, Uninstalling the Norton on a specific machine, etc . To remove the License from a Computer, you can goto the My Account tab and select your Norton Product and Click on the Dust Bin Icon. To do the License removal the Installation of the Norton Management Client is not required. I hope i made it clear this time.
Hi Subash,
I must too be doing something wrong. When I sign in to mynortonaccount from within n360 > Account, I do not see the dust bin icon. As you know I do have Norton Management installed and can see the dust bin icon when signed in to NM.
Thanks, Dave.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
As long as you have Norton Management installed on your main computer, you can release a licenced install from another computer without Norton Management installed?
You still cannot click on Account from the 360 GUI, which takes you to Norton Account, and manage your installs?
Thus you must have Norton management installed on at least one computer.
Have I got it now?
Hi Dave,Peter
I want you guys to take Mynortonaccount and the Account option in the Norton GUI out of the way.
If Norton Management is installed in the Computers under your Norton Products, those computers will show up under the My Devices tab in the Norton Management Website. In the devices which are having Norton Management already installed, you can Uninstall the Norton Remotely and along with the Norton Uninstallation the License also gets freed up, you can also Check the Health Status Remotely.
Thus you must have Norton management installed on at least one computer.
To free up a License, the Installation of Norton Management Client is not Required. Which means you can free the License from any machine even without the Norton Management Client in any of your machines.
OK. Thanks for clarifying.
So, SJspanky,
In this instance, you will need to contact Customer Support. Live Chat is usually the quickest. You can reach them at http://www.norton.com/chat
Dave.
OK. Thanks. I have it now. Sometimes it takes a while for me.
jamiroquai,
When you say you want to format do you want to use the system to Restore to Factory Condition that comes as a utility in many computers. If so and if the 365 days of free Norton were already installed on the computer then you should get back the original installation of Norton.
Can you tell us the make and the exact model identy of your computer and we can probably look it up and see what came preinstalled in that way.
If it does come back when you Restore to Factory Condition you may find one of three things:
1 -- That it needs to be activated and you don't have a key
2 -- It comes back activated and runs for 365 days (Yeah!)
3 -- It comes back activated and runs for the balance of the time that was left when you Restored to Factory Condition.
We can't help you predict which but let us know the details of your machine, exactly what Norton Product came with it and how much unexpired time you have left and we'll do our best to help you sort it out.
