Well, since Norton told me to call microsoft, my pc is totally hosed up.  Nothing is on it anymore - everything’s gone.  All it brings up is an old version of XP.  I have a complete backup on an external hard drive, but since I can’t get windows to point to it, nothing works…  Thanks norton for screwing up my pc.

There is a lot that I find confusing here.

But the most confusing is when you say you cannot access your external harddrive.  That should be one of the easiest things to do; basic windows behavior will usually find that harddrive and either tell you it is now usable or tell you it can't find the right drivers (which would also be unusal).  For the drive not even to be found when you boot up, well ...

The possibilities are slim:

A.  You are not looking for the drive correctly.  Open My Computer, then click on "Folders" in the menu bar and you should see all your available drives/partitions in the list on the left.  If not, then ...

B.  ... this might be a mechanical problem.  It could be with your USB or Firewire cable, with the port, with the drive itself.  Some link that lets the computer know that the drive is there waiting to be recognized isn't happening.

C.  ... plug and play may be disabled.  Try this (straight from microsoft help):

     1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

     2. Double-click Plug and Play.  If you receive a Configuration Manager message, click OK.

     3. In the Startup Type list, click Automatic, and then click OK.

     4. Close Services.

     5.  Restart the computer.

For now, let's just focus on C. above and see what that does for you.  Let us know and we'll go on from there.

Never mind - the external drive moved from 'g' to 'k'.  now if i could figure out how to use retrospect, everything would probably be ok!

I have a complete backup of the c drive from 8/4/08. Anybody know how i can restore from 8/4/08 and get the desktop running again?  i'm tired of using this old laptop with windows 98 on it.

THANKS!

correction - backed up on 9/4/08
