Protection updates download but date does not change so Fix Now remains active

Three times I have contacted Norton with my problem.  Eaach time they uninstall and reinstall 2009 and the problem is fixed for about 5 to 10 days. Then it reverts to the brown Fix Now button.  Updates are downloaded but the days since last update does not change and the Fix Now remains active.  I am still on version 16.0.0.125.

Where can I manually download version 16.1.0.33 if this has a cure for my problem I am told?

Let us know the error message you receive when running LiveUpdate. The 16.1 build is not yet available through live install. You need to run LiveUpdate and get the latest build.

When pressing the Fix Now button it says "Your Norton product has the latest protection updates" or "Norton LiveUpdate finished - No updates found". This is not surprising as it downloaded an update 6 hours ago. But then it also says "Definition Updates 5 days ago".

On the Fix Now window I get "Fix not complete" "Protection Updates - Status: Not Fixed"  The problem always starts when 4 days since the last update are reached.  However it does reset OK for the 6 to 10 days following support's reinstall.

I had the latest update this morning but that did not include the 16.1 build.

Hi electricst,

The 16.1.0.33 build is not identified as such when you view the update details. I believe it said "Product Update".

In any event, if you did receive it, it will not install until you perform a restart.

Could you do that and get back to us?

Thanks.

I have restarted twice since this mornings successful download.  The Fix Now and 5 days since… are still showing.

Update the virus definitions using the link Intelligent Updater . Open Norton product> Help and Support > About> now check the buildof your Norton product whether it is 16.0 or 16.1?

Sorry to interrupt, but there is too much misinformation being given here.

Intelligent Updater will NOT get the software update.

It comes only from Live Update.  You can speed the process up by running Live Update yourself, because everyone should have received it by now (at least for the English versions).

You will know you got it if your Live Update console says you should reboot.  Click on the reboot and the software update will be installed.

Good luck.

Sorry if I made a confusion by posting the Intelligent Updater link. As Mijcar said, Intelligent Updater will not provide the new build. I was posting that to help him download latest definitions.

Well, it was worth a try.  I have the latest definitions so that is good.

After rebooting, my version in the About Box is still 16.0 and the brown 'Fix Now' is still warning me my definitions are not up to date and it is 5 days since they were updated.

I don't understand why Norton designed it like.  An anti-virus program that tells lies must certainly be loosing them cutomers.  I am afraid to use their support again as last time (the 3rd time for this problem) they took over my PC (as they always do) turned off all start up programs and a number of other settings.  When they restarted it Norton were no where to be seen.  I spent a whole day just getting my PC working again!  They never came back to me to undo what they had done.

Thanks for your advice

I think I forgot the basics. Can you please make sure that your system date is correct?

It certainly is.  In the UK it is still 14 November.18.25!

Do you have the product key with you? Can we try reinstalling the Norton 2009 version?

Download and run Norton Removal Tool. Then reinstall the 2009 version from the following link.

 NAV:- http://www.norton.com/nav09

 NIS:- http://www.norton.com/nis09

Activate the product with your product key.

Run LiveUpdate and make sure that you get the latest build 16.1. Many issues are fixed in the 2009.1 build.

Uninstalling and reinstalling is the standard Norton response to my problem.  It works everytime!  Unfortunately the problem returns after 10 days of working ok.

I still have the file support used to reinstall 10 days ago (NIS09EN.exe).  I think before I go down this route I want to be sure a new download actually has the 16.1.0.33 included.  I was under the impression that even after downloading the latest version it still had to be updated to 16.1 by Live Update.

Electric

Let me make it clear for you.

The 2009.1/16.1 build is not available through liveinstall. That means even if you reinstall the 2009 version, you will still be receiving the 16.0 build.

Now our approach to resolve the issue:-

As you said after reinstalling the Norton product, it works fine for 10days and then the issue re occur, I have taken for granted that the LiveUpdate works perfect for 10 days.

So we will remove the 2009 version using the Norton Removal Tool. Then we will download and install the 2009 version. Now you get the 16.0 build.

As your LiveUpdate is working fine now, you run LiveUpdate and get the 16.1 build through it, make sure that you restart your computer after running LiveUpdate.

So now we have the 16.1 build.

Now check this link which has valuable info on 16.1 build posted by Tim Lopez. You can see that this 16.1 build has a fix for the issue you are currently encountering. Am I making it clear for you now? Let us try this out now.

I understand what you are saying.  However bear in mind that I am getting updates OK even today.  It is just that none of them included 16.1.

I can update maually with no problem other than the update does not reset the update date to zero.  The problem is that I along with a number of other people seem to be updating to a Norton server that does not have the 6.1 update on it yet.

Hi electrist,

I sent you are private message on how you could send me the logs if you would like me to analyze them.

When I downloaded the latest definitions and ran the exe I turned 'Secure Green' instantly.   However whenever I try to manually run Live Update I am now told that No updates are found.

I guess my best plan is to update with the definitions each week until version 16.1 becomes available other than by Live Update.
