Question about MalwareBytes FREE

Hi
I recently downloaded MalwareBytes free as a secondary scanner and have ran a scan a few times.

I ran the scan called threat scan and I read in another thread that this replaces a quick scan even though it scans over 200,000 files.

In this different thread I also read that the custom scan works as a full system scan so I thought this morning I would run it just too check.

I came back to my computer and found out took 2 and a half hours to complete 100,000 files! I don’t want to be waiting hours for the scan to complete so I stopped it.

Bottom line I’m wondering can I rely on the threat scanner from MalwareBytes which scans 200,000 ish files for a secondary scanner when Norton scans 400,000 files?

I just don’t want to be waiting hours and hours for secondary scanner to complete!

Norton completes it’s full system scan in around 20ish mins and MalwareBytes completes a threat scan in around 10ish mins

Any information on this would be very helpful!

Thanks a lot

AA1,

You cannot modify the time needed for MBAM to run a full scan, other than interrupt it!

I would run Full MBAM scans only if I had serious suspicions that my system is infected, which is not your case!!

So running a N360 full system scan and a weekly or daily MBAM quick scan, or whatever it's called, is more than enough.

From time to time, when you decide to run an MBAM full scan, please allow it to complete!!

Hope this helps,

Kind regards,

Hi again Apostolos
I agree with you this makes a lot of sense!
I run a Norton 360 full scan every Thursday and then give Norton some idle time to complete it’s tasks!
I’m actually running that scan right now as I’m typing this!

In this case I will stick to running the threat scan if I get kind of suspicious and if I get really suspicious I will let it run the long system scan!

But as you said I’m not infected at the moment and I hope I don’t get infected anytime soon! (Touch wood)

Thanks a lot for your help once again!
Have a great afternoon/evening

Hi AA1,

You too, also, keep in mind, unless you are having a serious CPU, that having the browser opened and surfing and running a full system scan similtaneously, can use many resources.

It's not a problem but I think it's a good thing to mention it.

B/R,

Hi Apostolos
I will keep that in mind although usually when performing a full system scan I have everything closed apart from the program!

Thanks a lot

Hi, AudiA1. Try unchecking the rootkit scan option in the scanner. It will significantly reduce the scan times.

Hi F4E
Thanks for reminding me!

I turned this on when I was unsure if I was infected or not and then forgot to untick it, so thank you for the reminder!

Cheers!

Malwarebytes has a new Beta 2.0.2.1007 that fixes some of those long scan times. Read about it here. MB has stated that the Threat Scan is the best choice and the Custom Scan (full) is there for the few that may want it but a good anti-virus is best for a full scan.

Thanks for that PhoneMan
I’ll make sure to update to that when I next run a full scan with MBAM

Cheers!
