Question about Norton site safety icons

Hello to all,

I've noticed, since my last update to Adobe Flash Player version 11.3.300.257, that the Norton Site Safety icons on Google work intermittently.

I have to click 2 or 3 times to a search or refresh the page 1 or 2 times before they appear.

I have NIS 2012 19.7.1.5 on 3 machines, one with XP Pro SP3 and 2 with W7 64-bit Home Premium.

I use only IE8 (XP) & IE9 (W7).

I saw a post at "Tech Outpost" forum where a member described that Flash Player is needed for NIS to display the Site Safety icons at Google search.

Could this be an issue?

How to make the icons display instantly as usual?

P.S. I made no recent changes to both my 3 machines at the exception of Windows Update, (June), and new version of Java 7.5.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi dickevans,

Thank you for your reply.

I will do as you suggested and report back.

Also, I've noticed the last 3 days, that when I ran the Reputation Quick and Full scans I had to try 3 or 4 times before they ran successfully, because there was a message: " NIS can't connect to the Symantec servers etc". Same thing for Application ratings" . Finally after 10 minutes, they all ran with success (after I tried 2 or 3 times).

However, my internet connection was up all the time and LiveUpdate had no problems to connect to Symantec.

I do not know if this is related with my previous problem and also I do not exactly how the Safe Web icons work.

Is there a database inside NIS or is the product connects to the Symantec servers while I search on Google and rate the sites?

I will report back after trying to uninstall Flash Player and see how it works.

Best,

dickevans,

I forgot to mention that disabling the flash player add-on from IE8 or IE9 doesn't have any effect.

I have a similar setup as you (XP with IE8, couple of W7-64b with IE9, all with Flash 11.3.300.257) and currently have no problems.

There are multiple possibilities. A couple of them are 1) an IE settings/configuration issue, and 2) a problem with the Flash installation.

1) IE:  Tools -> manage add-ons.

Pull down "Show" to "All add-ons".

Some believe that, under "Microsoft Corporation", those with "DOM" in the name need to be enabled.  I'm not certain of that, but it's something to try.  Then close the browser, delete temp files (e.g., ccleaner), and restart it.

I disable most (not all) add-ons.  Of course, all the Symantec add-ons should be enabled.

Test it having made this change to see if it works now.

As a standard procedure, I run with Flash disabled since it's one of the most common targets for the hackers.  If I go to a site that needs it, I turn it on temporarily.  I am currently not having a problem, whether it is on or off.

2) Adobe says to uninstall, if you're having a problem, before updating.  I always do that anyway.

<http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html#main_Download_the_Adobe_Flash_Player_uninstaller>

Under "1. Download the installer ..." click on "uninstaller".  Adobe says it works for both 32 and 64b systems.

Quit the browser.  Run the uninstaller.  Adobe says to restart the computer.  I just run ccleaner and haven't had a problem.

Now download the installer. <http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=JOPDD>  Be sure to uncheck the Google Toolbar.

Test it and see what happens.

Hi joen & dickevans,

I followed the steps indicated, uninstalled FP 11.3.300.257, and before install it again, I checked Safety web icons.

They worked but intermittenty, first conclusion, FP is not needed for them to work.

Then installed FP again, successfully, but the small issue persists.

From time to time they do not work, but after refreshing the page one or 2 times, they are back.

If I continue the Google search, for let's say 5 more searches, everything works fine and at the next search the issue returns.

I suspect some recent changes in Goggle's code and maybe Symantec will need to make some adjustments.

If I remember correctly, there was a similar issue last year with NIS safety web icons not rendering properly all the time.

Let me know if further steps are required, I'm waiting for new instructions.

By the way, XML DOM is always enabled on both IE8 & IE9 browsers.

Also I have Java SSV & SSV2 Helper disabled, Norton toolbar disabled (totally useless to me), but the 2 remaining Symantec add-ons always enabled.

Also, I never use Identity Safe. (totally useless also to me but still enabled in NIS).

Thank you for your time.

Best,
