Question About Storing Restore Points to a New Destination

In Norton Ghost 15.0, can you copy an incremental restore point to a new location and maintain the integrity of that point?  In other words, If the base point is Feb. 1 and there are incremental poitns on Feb 7, 14 and 21, can you simply copy the Feb 21 point to a new locatin (e.g. a network drive) and then restore from that point alone if need be?

I used the copy utilty in Ghost to copy the base and the incrementals and I notice that the file size of the incremetnals is the same (approximatley) as teh base.  I don't want to archive more than I need.

Please advise.

Hi pittghost,

Welcome to the forum. Yes you can do this either from Windows Explorer or from within Ghost using Tools > Copy Recovery point.

You need to make sure and copy all of the base + incrementals which comprise that backup set though. In other words if I have a base called C_Drive001.v2i I would need to make sure and copy this + all the files starting with C_Drive001 and ending in .iv2i. This comprises the entire backup set.

You cannot just copy an incremental which ends in .iv2i, it won't work. Similarly you also cannot copy the base and only some of the incremental files. Each incremental builds on top of the previous one and if you don't include them all then you will break the recovery point chain.

What might serve your purpose better is to do Recovery Point consolidation.

For example, if you have a base + 10 incrementals you can consolidate these so that when completed you will have only the base + 1 incremental. E.g., incrementals 2-10 will have been consolidated into a single incremental. To do this you go into Tools > Manage Backup Destination. Then highlight the recovery point set you wish to consolidate and click Delete. On the next page, select Automatic.

You will need to have some extra space on your backup drive for this consolidation to work as Ghost needs working space to store a temporary file which contains backup data for each of the incremental images. Upon completion of consolidation Ghost removes all but the 1 incremental thereby freeing up some space.

Hope this helps and please let me know how it goes.

Thanks

Allen

Thanks.  I'm a bit confused.  If I use the Ghost copy utililty and only copy the last incremental, is that accomplishing what I want?

On a related note, I had chatted with a Norton tech and asked if I could use explorer to simply copy teh points over to my network drive and he indicated I could not, but that I needed to use the Ghost copy utility.

Hi pittghost,

If you use the Ghost copy utility then yes you would point it to the last incremental in the set and Ghost knows how to handle the rest.

If you copy through Windows Explorer then you should copy the base + all incrementals associated with that backup set. The person from Chat support was incorrect in saying that you cannot copy through Windows Explorer. They tell people that because it is easy to make a mistake and not copy all the files from the recovery point set so the safest thing they can tell people is to only use Ghost. As long as you copy all the files from that backup set you can do so through Explorer. I've done it many times and in fact actually used one of these copies to do a system restoral a few years back.

I really think in your case you might get better results by doing the recovery point consolidation though. If you do this you won't even have to copy your recovery point set to a second drive because they will be consolidated right on your primary backup drive and will free up the extra space.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

That's very helpful and what I thought.  Thanks!
