Questions about Backup in 360

Hello,

I recently purchased and installed Norton 360 v2.0 and I’m considering using the online backup feature, which would require that I purchase additional space (probably 50 GB). I have a few questions as I weigh this option against the competition, and I appreciate any answers you can provide.

1. Is it possible to view backed up files online via a computer that does not have 360 installed, or can you only access them through the 360 interface?

2. In the help file, it mentions that the “Office” file type includes Microsoft Office files such as .doc and .xls, but not the Office 2007 extensions like .docx and .xlsx. Will these be included in a backup also?

3. If I wish to add all files of a file extension not listed under one of the categories, is it possible to add that extension, or do I have to add all the files individually?

4. If I delete a file on purpose, will it be deleted in the online backup also?

5. Similarly, if I move or rename a file, will the online version be duplicated?

6. I want to do automatic backups to the online storage and periodic backups to an external hard drive. Is this possible with 360 and, if so, how complicated is the process?

7. I have noticed the price of extra storage going down. Anyone want to guess if this will continue? Do you think Norton will eventually offer an unlimited storage for a fixed price option like the competitors?

Thank you very much for your time.

Doug

Thank you for your thoughtful reply.

Allow me to revisit one point:

5. Similarly, if I move or rename a file, will the online version be duplicated?

No, the reason is same as above. Also, there is no incremental backup feature in Norton 360 where the files in the backup will be updated automatically according to the changes made in any files in your computer.

Allow me to revisit one point: So that means that if I am working on a file on a daily basis (say a Microsoft Money file or a word document), it only gets backed-up the first time I save it? And, if I change the document every day, the changes will not be backed up, even if I have backups set to automatic? That seems to defeat a very significant purpose of backup.

Hi DougieVan,

When you set it to automatic backup, then all the files will get backedup irrespective of whether you have changed/updated it or not. Hence, there will be two files in your backup with same name - one which you have backedup first time, and the other which got backedup through Automatic/Scheduled backup. There is no incremental backup where it replace the old file with the new one.

Excellent, and thank. I will give it a shot!
