Quiet Mode Confusion

I'm using the latest version of NIS12 on a Windows 7 32-bit computer.  I burned a few CDs and noticed the NIS tray icon didn't revert back from Quiet Mode.  I have Disk Burn detection enabled under Silent Mode Settings, but no user-specified programs configured.

Right-clicking on the tray icon still allowed me to turn on Silent Mode, but the only way to get the icon out of Quiet Mode was a reboot.

History told me that: "Disk burn stopped. Quiet Mode still on due to other active program or programs."  I didn't think any other programs were running, except background programs.

Two questions:

What other programs will keep NIS in Quiet Mode (and don't invoke them by themselves)?

How can I turn off Quiet Mode without a reboot?

Hello BajaBoojum,

I am sorry that the Norton Community do not have an answer to your dilemma.

If a reboot has cleared Quiet Mode then it just sounds to me like there is a bug in 2012 which Norton need to deal with. Hopefully Norton Staff will pick this up.

If you have either stopped the burn or complete it then Norton 2012 should have turned off Quiet Mode.

Quote from Norton Help About Quiet Mode:

After Quiet Mode is turned on, it turns off after the disk-burning session is complete. You cannot turn off Quiet Mode during the disk-burning session by turning off the IMAPI 2.0 Disk Burn option in the Settings window.

It could however be something to do with IMAPI 2.0 support which as I understand it only comes installed with Vista and Windows 7 and requires to be downloaded for Windows XP. Some disc burning programs require that support.

Hope that helps.

It is something that has not been resolved since NIS2011.  I am still having this problem occasionally.......specially after running problems like MBAN, ThreatFire and DVD video burning.  SIlent Mode did not return to NORMAL mode.

All of the above has been configured in the Silent Mode.

:smileysurprised:

Have you ever opened the main interface of NIS before rebooting?

I have seen on few occasions where Silent Mode/Quiet Mode icon only changed back to the normal icon after opening NIS. I have never checked the history to see if it was just a problem with the icon or whether Silent Mode/Quiet Mode was still enabled when it should not have been.

I opened the NIS interface to see if Silent Mode was shown as still on there and in the tray icon.  Both locations implied it was off.  Checking the history revealed Quiet Mode was still on.

This bug is not a big deal, but I didn't notice if it suspended LiveUpdate.  If so, that is the biggest problem.
