On the work computer I ran the Norton Removal Tool for Norton Internet Security 2003 as its subscription had expired long ago and I was annoyed by the biweekly reminders to renew. The tool apparently ran fine (this is on a computer running Windows 2000), but after restarting and typing in the administrator password the windows desktop won't load (hangs up on a pre-wallpaper screen, or a plain black screen when ran in safe mode). I can still pull task manager up, but even in safe mode I am unable to bring the desktop up. The bottom toolbar for windows sometimes pops up for a flash when restarted, but that is the closest I have been to the desktop working.
I managed to open a file in notepad so the computer is functioning somewhat, but I am unsure of how to fix this. Thank you for any help.
