Ransomware - Read or Weep

If you haven't taken an image backup of your PC lately, better take one soon.

Note this is just one example of a number of these that are currently in the wild: http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9215711/Ransomware_squeezes_users_with_bogus_Windows_activation_demand

Pay close attention to the fact that short of paying the “ransom” demanded in this ransomware instance or supplying an “activation” code in this malware instance, your PC is hosed. Only way to recover is from a previous image restore or reformat and totally reinstall your OS and programs

To F-Secure's credit, at least they cracked it enough to provide a product code to free up your PC.

Thank goodness you found a way to get rid of ransomeware. Will it remove Norton 2011 ransomeware for me?

Will it remove Norton 2011 ransomeware for me?

Good question! However, you will have to ask Symantec about that .............................

Despite your repeated postings your messages are not being deleted so please concentrate on getting that right before you take potshots at others.

Quads has a post giving information about this

If the Malware specialist breaks and removes the Winlock properly ther is no need to reformat reinstall etc.

Correct indeed. That is what F-Secure did with this latest variant. However, all that takes time and your PC is out of commision in the mean time. Whereas, an image restore takes minutes to accomplish and your back up running.
