Re-Formatting

As the title suggests I am being forced to reformat my hard drive in order to do a clean install of Windows 7 due to errors. My only concern for this is my product activation on Norton 360 5.0 Premier. I have used my 3 computers already, will my fresh install be considered a new computer? It is the same machine, but will be reset and whipped clean. If so, how do I transfer my license to the fresh install? I do not want to lose my norton protection over this. Thanks,

The honest answer seems to be it all depends and I don't know on what but some people report that it recognizes that it is a reinstall and doesn't notch up an error message "You have exceeded your permitted number of activations" and some come in here reporting that it has and how do they correct this.

So first lets try to avoid this since there are now two ways to deal this.

Let me give you the new one first ....

On the clean computer open up your MyNortonAccount via https://account.norton.com/amsweb/default.do  by entering your email address and password from the days of the previous installation.

You should find your product listed and there should now be a Download Button alongside the entry for it..

Click on that and it should download and install the current version of your product already activated with your KEY !!!!

NOTE If you did a Restore to Factory Condition using the special media or menu item it will reinstall any trial security program that may have come with the computer and it is essential to get rid of this before reinstalling Norton and you have to do the normal Windows Uninstall/Remove Programs and then run a special tool that most security programs have available for download.

So if this is the case for you please let us know what the security program is that is on the clean computer after reformatting. Of course if you just used the standard Microsoft Windows Installation media  then this does not apply.

Isn't that neat? <g>  I hope it works since I've not had to try it.

If that doesn't work for you then ue the second method:

Deal with the trial security application as mentioned above if this applies and then contact Norton's OnLine Customer Support via the CHAT route as below and they can sort out the number of activations for you and enable the Download as described above.

To contact customer support Click on this link and work on from there. You may have to scroll down a little to see the CHAT button.

You can choose CHAT or Email; email or phone may have a long wait time and feedback from users tells us that CHAT is by far the best at resolving problems.

Note that that link is to the USA/CAN website so if you are located elsewhere I'm sure you will be able to find the equivalent location on your local Symantec website; some pages have a link at the top right where you can select the country you are located in.

Please let us know how you get on ....  or if you have any questions.

Wow, excellent reply! And Prompt to! If that is all I have to do then I am set. I built this computer myself from new parts recently purchased, so it will just be a standard wipe and re-install. Your information is QUITE appreciated and I can't thank you enough for being so thorough. What a great comunity! :D

Please help us all by coming back and telling us exactly how that new download technique works ... or doesn't!
