RE: Norton 360 compatibility woth Windows 7 HP

A few months ago I purchased Windows 360 and installed it on two Laptops, Two smart phones and a Desktop machine running Windows 7 Home Premium. I also installed Norton Utilities on both laptops and the desktop machine.

Recently my desktop machine has become extremely slow at opening any Apps, I started the desktop machine in safe mode and tried opening various apps, the only one that caused a problem was Norton 360 so I uninstalled both Norton Utilities and the Norton 360 app.

I then reinstalled only the Norton 360 but the problem reoccurred, During the reinstall I was asked if I wanted to reinstall the 360 or install it on a new machine, I think that my mistake was to reinstall it. I have now uninstalled it again.

So my question is this, how do I install a fresh version on Norton 360 on the desktop or is there a better way to proceed.

Many thanks in advance of a solution.

I still seem to be having a problem with Apps/Programmes responding and then not responding then responding again. I have run various things to help with this issue, including Disk clean up. The upshot is that the machine boots up and shuts down really quickly, and when its not having a hissy fit it is very quick and responsive.

Its as if it runs OK but when it's left for a while something slows it right down. It has occurred to me that Norton runs stuff in the background when the machine is idle and maybe that's what is causing problems. I have still not reinstalled Norton Utilities.

It's really frustrating as it's almost running so well. Is there any way of testing out my theory.

Thank you for your very prompt and helpful reply.

I had pretty much done as you suggested but not in exactly the same way, as I am not particularly computer literate. I managed to uninstall N360, and after searching for any leftover Norton folders and files I deleted them.

I then ran sfc which took sometime, but it did not actually find anything but I believe it fixes any problems that it comes across. I then reinstalled N360, and after it made several self fixes during the install all seemed to be working OK The next day the machine booted up much faster, but again some apps were a little slow in opening, so I again ran sfc, which took  far less time and for good measure I ran CHKDSK so far everything seems OK. I have not yet installed Norton utilities.

I know I ought to replace the machine which it about five years old, and running a unsupported operating system but as I only use the machine for dealing with photographs because of the larger screen.

Thanks again for your help.

On your windows 7 machine, I'd recommend downloading Norton's Removal and Reinstall tool from this link Download and run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool. Scroll down to "Remove Norton device security completely" and then follow steps outlined ensuring to note step 5 & 6 "Click Advanced Options" selecting "Remove Only".  Run the tool allowing it to remove Norton Programs from your PC

After restarting your PC, Do Not select reinstall at this time and close the tool.

Bring up Windows Explorer and look for any of the following left over folders and manually delete them.

C:\Users\Public\Downloads (Norton - original downloaded files)
C:\Users\your user name\Downloads (original downloader file)
C:\Users\your user name\AppData\LocalLow (any folder in reference to Norton)
C:\Program Files\(Norton Security folder)
C:\Program Files (x86)\(NortonInstaller folder)
C:\Program Files\Common Files\AV\(Norton)
C:\Program Files\Common Files\(Symantec Shared)
C:\ProgramData\(Norton folder)
C:\ProgramData\(NortonInstaller folder)
C:\ProgramData\(Symantec folder if present)

Next, start the Windows Control Panel and click on Administrative Tools.  Select the Task Scheduler.  Click on the folder called Task Scheduler Library on the left side.  This should open a sub group of folders beneath it.  Look for one labeled as Norton and delete it, if present.  Also look for one labeled as Remediation.  Click on it and see if it references Norton, if so, delete that folder as well then close the Task Scheduler and reboot your PC.

Next, login to your "My Norton Account"  https://my.norton.com  and download a new copy of Norton 360 and reinstall.  Reboot and then run live update several more times, rebooting between until no further updates are noted.

I'd recommend holding off reinstalling Norton Utilities on this machine for now and run it for a couple days or so to ensure everything is working correctly.

If you continue to have problems, you'll need to contact Norton Support through the following link Norton Support and selecting either Chat or Phone Support, which ever one you feel more comfortable using.  Note, there may be extended wait times due to COVID-19 limitations, so please be patent.
