Before attempting the SP 3 installation, I disabled NIS 2008 as much as possible. On the NIS tab, under Settings, I turned off Auto Protect, Automatic Live Update, Personal Firewall, Intrusion Prevention, Spyware Protection and Outgoing & Incoming Email Scanning - all for one hour. (There should be a much better one button way to do this, as I was able to do in prior years using Norton System Works)

I agree with you. Norton 360 does put something in the context menu (Right Mouse Click) of the N360 icon on the system tray but so far as I can see NIS2008 requires you to go to Options and drill down which means you have to know what you are doing <g>
I've seen it suggested, with some reason, that any single action disable in a security system is a weakness that opens it up to exploitation by malware so that may override our personal convenienc.
Let's see what Norton Staff have to say.
Actually, you were well advised to remove NIS 2008 before updating to SP3. See the device manager and XP SP3-NIS2008 thread on this forum. You probably escaped a few problems.

You must have misunderstood me or I expressed myself very badly -- I did not remove NIS 2008 before installing SP3. However I did it from the ISO image version burned to a CD and not on line. I did encounter two or three popups from NIS about things wanting to do things it did not like -- mostly PCHealth which I thought was a commercial utility but turns out to be a Windows Service in XP.
I just told it to allow and there were no problems in completing the installation. However I know that many have had problems -- I wonder how many of them were using the Live stub on Windows Update? -- which is why I'd like to see an easier disable for installations and updates from reputable sources.
PS Ooops I didn't see the thread line correctly -- you were addressing the OP.
