I recently received a pop-up message from Gmail alerting me they've detected a hacker gaining access from Romania. Shortly thereafter, windows began to rapidly open, many contained my recent files. At the end, I noticed many of my directories were missing. However, I am discovering some in different locations with duplicates or triplicates. The screen no longer looks like Vista Aero. My guess is it looks like Windows 95.
Since I'm not versed in this, can someone describe what happened? I was running Norton Internet Security 2011 with the default settings. Should that have caught and prevented it?
I vaguely recall an option in Norton Internet Security which allows the user to open the program and stop all traffic in this type of situation. Does anyone know if I remember correctly?
Are there any logs that would give me more information about what happened?
