Our application can't connect to our servers when Norton Personal Firewall is on...
how can we debug this?
We are in beta but I can get you a copy of the software (I would just need your email address) for you to test.
Thanks, raza
We haven't sold a stand-alone version of Norton Personal Firewall for a couple of years so I'm kind of surprised that you are encountering this at all.
As a plug-in to iTunes, is your application a library (DLL) or full application (EXE)? What protocols and ports does your application use?
This was a complaint from one of our beta testers (who can have everything...as you probably know!!)
Our application is an EXE and has various DLLs ...We also embed Mozilla and have their XULrunner as a separate component.
We use XML-RPC, HTTP, HTTPS...and XRE...but I think the problem being reported was with XML-RPC
I will download your latest and test...then I will post more information for you here...
thanks for the quick replies...
regards, Raza
You can check the Norton firewall program rules and see if there is a block rule for your exe. If there’s one, you can delete it and replace it with an allow rule.
It should not matter if you are using XML-RPC or not. Norton Firewall did put some restrictions on certain protocols due to security concerns. For example, we restricted SSDP to be performed on Trusted/Shared Network only. I'd suggest narrowing down the issue by protocol first.
OK…we’ll try to narrow it down. Unfortunately, the user that initially reported the problem did not reply to my email requesting the product version. All seems to be fine with the latest products from Symantec
We are a software startup called TuneUp Media (http://www.tuneupmedia.com) in the music space. We are building an iTunes plug-in called the TuneUp Companion which has a proprietary browser built into it and does various music management tasks.
Currently, we are seeing problems with PCs that have Norton Personal Firewall. Is there a whitepaper or document that teaches software developers how to work nicely with Personal Firewall??
Thanks, Raza
rzaidi, Norton AntiVirus, Norton Personal Firewall and Norton Internet Security all contain firewall functionality of some sort or another. There isn't documentation available for your purposes. There also aren't any interfaces available for third-party applications to use.
What sorts of problems are your users having?
