Moved to Norton Toolbar/Identity Safe Board for better exposure.
Phil_D,
Thanks for the welcome, and the assistance!
To answer your questions:
- yes, I had an online vault and she had a local vault
- we have separate Windows accounts/logins
I tried the procedures you suggested (which, by the way, were expertly outlined and easy to follow), but did not have success. I received the error message "Unable to process the file for import. Please make sure the file is valid and try again".
I should add that this restored file came from an earlier NIS; that is, several patches had been applied in the meantime since the image was saved a few weeks ago.
Think it is worth a try to reinstall my original Norton CD and try with that, and if successful export the data, then do the Live Updates? Any other advice you can give would be appreciated. Thanks so much for your help.
Hi mm3,
Thanks for the feedback and verification of your setup in regards to vaults and windows' users accounts.
In regards to the previous file not Importing (if it is the correct backed up file) the .dat format for the Export has changed over the version changes with NIS - so it is possible that there are differneces betwn your Exported data file and the current program being able to Import it. Not much help now, but we usually recommend Exporting in both .csv and .dat format for that exact reason. The .cvs (plain text) remained compatible over the different versions.
Ihave been involved with the restoring of files in the past (only can happen when thee was a Local Vault) - so let me run you thru my normal procedure and see if you can locate the file first of all and then see what happens when we know we have the correct file.get it Imported. Please bear with me as you read thru the procedure in order to get a feel for what we are tyring to do:
Here goes:
Please be advised the numbers behind the NIS_ may be slightly different. Also the S-1-5-21 is a random generated number and the ending of it may be different from what I have shown below.
Also, please make sure you are logged out of your Vault before copying the folder to the new folder location. If you do not log out - the information you seek cannot be copied and it will throw an error.
Conversly, when you try to Import, you must be logged into the Vault in order to see the Import function.
In Vista/Win 7:
C:\ProgramData\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NIS_21.0.1.3\IdentitySafeDataStore\S-1-5-21-1845553030-3031872880-4008053321-1001\
The Program Data Folder may be hidden in windows 7. so first choose Computer -> organize -> folder and search options -> view -> show hidden files and folders -> apply
1. Copy the IdentitySafeDataStore folder to a new folder in a convenient location on your computer.
2. In the Identity Safe Settings Window select Import Data > Configure [+]
3. In the Import Identity Safe Data window, 'Browse' to the new folder you just created in step 1
4. Double click the folder to open it and select the file IDDStore2 > Open.
5 .Under 'While importing data', select 'Merge with existing data' and click OK. You may be prompted to enter the password for the old data.
6. If you have changed any login credentials for a particular site since the older data was created, you will be presented with a Data Conflict window. Select which login version you wish to keep and click OK.
7. OK your way out and check that the merged logins have been added and are working.
Let us know how things work out.
Thats's the end of the procedure - just a word of caution - if you and your wife use the same Norton Account, once the file is Imported - both your Online Vault and her Online Vault will be one in the same. Actually they already are in case you haven;t noticed.
The Online Vault is tied to a Norton Account, whereas with the Local Vault it is tied to a Windows User Account. Thus you can have a Local Vault for each of you with different log-ins. If you are both using the same Norton Account you will have the same log-ins in the Online Vault.
Yes, I know confusing - before doing anything - if you have by chance managed to get the log-ins back into your Online Vault - please Export them using both .csv and .dat format.
The reinstall may work and depending how old the CD is, we may be able to get the Local Vault back as well. Please tell us which version of NIS you have on CD - if you can't find the version - the year on the box should do.
I certainly hope I did not confuse matters for you with all the information. Please do come back with any copmment and especially if you were able to find the Identity Safe Data Store.
I am running NIS 21.1.0.18 on W7-64 bit.
PC crashed, and saved image I had was corrupt and could not restore properly, so I had to reinstall from scratch. I had created an online vault, but my wife did not, so her logins were lost. No backups were done.
Although the image will not restore, I can retrieve individual files from the saved image, and I found these:
ProgramData\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NIS_21.1.0.18\IdentitySafeDataStore\
3 folders under here:
S-1-5-21-2914317470-1615937129-2037051131-501 (nothing in this one)
S-1-5-21-2914317470-1615937129-2037051131-1000 (has another folder & a .dat file & a .log file). Opening the folder shows icons from my saved login sites, so I assume that the .dat file has my saved login data.
S-1-5-21-2914317470-1615937129-2037051131-1004. This is the one I am interested in. It has a folder, f974bcb61a964ea19a823f19d244f10b, which contains the icons for my wife's login site. It also has a I{f974bcb6-1a96-4ea1-9a82-3f19d244f10b}.dat file, which I assume has the login data. There is no .log file .
Is there a way to get the data from this file to recover the logins? I have seen postings about restoring data from IDD folders, but that appears to apply to older release.
yank,
Thanks for the suggestions.
There was no IDD2.dat file in that folder location, just the folders/files that I previously posted. Something evidently has changed in the way NIS stores data now.
If there are no other suggestions, we'll probably just invest the several hours needed to recover & restore logins. This time we'll make sure to back them up.

Sorry that didn't work out. The IDDStor2.dat folder is only available if you have a Local Vault available and appaarently it was removed when the Vault was converted to an Online Vault. FWIW, I also have three folders in my
C:\ProgramData\Norton\{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}\NIS_21.0.1.3\IdentitySafeDataStore
The most recent one of those three folders contains my IDDStor2 files.
