Recovery HDD drive letter changed to C now cant restore

I have 2 disks in the PC. C: and D:

D: has been the Norton backup drive...forever. I have successfully restored from it in the past.

So I want to upgrade my C: drive to a bigger HDD. I had another thread with issues fighting the windows SRP partition, and somehow along the way something has happened to my d: drive in that:

Once I replace the C: hdd with an unformatted drive and boot off my Norton CD, its telling me that my backup drive is "C" and of course, when I try to restore my backup image to the unallocated drive its telling me "the source and destination are the same"

But f I put my ORIGINAL WORKING WINDOWS C drive back in, it boots normally and windows explorer shows my backup drive as D again. ?!?

Net result is I am unable to restore to the new drive, and am at a loss as how to fix it.
