I ran Norton Antivirus 2006 until a bit earlier this year when I installed Avast. Prior to installing Avast, I did an uninstall of Norton Antivirus, which seems to have had a minimal effect, with the Antivirus files still there and the services still installed. Eventually, a few weeks ago I tired of this, and disabled the services.
I just double clicked on a Winword document, up came Word - but actually it stalled out, as Navw32 seemed to be hanging. When I ended Navw32 via the task manager, a series of dialogs was shown saying that Normal.dot was infected, etc. I answered No to all of these. Now word tells me that my document is not available and I find no trace of it in the directory, nor in the Trash can.
Where has Navw32 / Norton put my file, and how do I get it back? This is on WinXP Pro with Microsoft Office Pro 2003 / Word 2003
The problem for us as well, is that the file might have been removed by an improperly removed program. Since it was uninstalled, or half-uninstalled, it is anybody's guess what happened to the file. Very few parts are left behind after Norton has been removed, even through add/remove, so it should not have been able to delete or quarantine anything.
Have you looked in the quarantine of your present antivirus software. While a part of Norton may have reacted, the other program may be the one that took the file out.
My other antivirus program, Avast, shows me no files. Furthermore, in the rare case where it has detected malware, it always makes a verbal announcement (actually, the only instances so far have been autorun.inf issues). I think all the Norton Antivus files are still in place, it's just that the services have been put on manual or disabled, and the relevant programs in the Scheduler disables. The thing that I didn't do, because I wasn't aware of it, was to remove the plug in from Microsoft Office as described here:
It was definitely Navw32.exe that was running at the time this happened about 24 hours ago, as I checked the task scheduler and had to terminate Navw32.exe to allow the process of bringing up Word to continue. In all liklihood, it was either Navw32.exe (or a component) that did the deletion or possibly Word itself. Now Word generally makes a tmp file (recovery file) of the .doc when it brings it up, and there are is no such file. I have also run an initial scan by a file recovery utility (Recuva), which has found no trace of the file.
Therefore, my question remains, where is the directory or location that Navw32 would have put the quarantined file, and given that I have all my Norton Antivirus 2006 file/programs still here, what program do I activate to show me the quarantined list? If I can get to the file manually myself, that is far preferred.
Same answer I am afraid. You have a four year old antivirus product that doesn't necessarily put things in the same place as the new versions. Since Norton isn't actually uninstalled, you could try turning all the applicable services back on so that hopefully you can get access to the quarantine. You should be able to restore the file from quarantine, if Avast doesn't stop Norton from working properly.
You could also try a Windows system restore to the closet time prior to the removal of the file. System restore aften doesn't bother with anything but Windows system files, but it may be worth a try.

Such situation are unpleasant for me. But couple weeks ago I determined it for seconds and totally free of charge as I kept firmly in mind - recovery word. Moreover the utility showed me one of its possibilities for example can work with .doc, .docx, .dot and .dotx files and with any version of Microsoft Word text editor. It helped some of my friends and one of them thanked me a lot.
