My daughters laptop HD failed. New unit with os reinstall will get her up but she lacks redundancy in her data backup. Norton is it. How or what does she need to be able to reconstruct her original account for access to backed up data? Can she expect to be able to recover iTunes data and photos?
I will have her laptop back up Tuesday and she is back to college jan 4th so any assistance will be most appreciated. Thanks on advance for any help here.

I assume that she had Norton 360 on her old machine and that she used the backup facility in that. Can you confirm that?
Where did she back up the data to? Was it the Norton Online backup or some other external device?
As to what she should be able to recover ... that should just depend on what she chose to back up.
Assuming it was N360 then was the license she was using a stand alone or one of a set of license held by someone else such as yourself? Does she have a record of her Norton sign in details (please DO NOT post them here)?

Yes She has Norton 360 and it was active on that laptop up to the other evening when it quit She is the principle on a three license account. The other two are used by her brothers. She did have the backup feature enabled. If everything she chose to backup is available she should be in good shape. As far as her account info, login and such, I hope it is available. She is not here right now but will be later and I will find out. I would assume Norton could use her email for some sort of verification, should all else fail.

It looks as if all should be OK, provided that you still have access to wherever the data was stored (i.e. it was not on the machine that has died). The first thing she needs to do is to get Norton up and running again on her new machine. If the machine comes with an anti-malware product other than Norton (e.g. McAfee) already installed she needs to ensure that this is not activated and is thoroughly removed before installing Norton. This can be done by using the normal un-install process from the control panel, but you then probably also need to get the special removal tool from the relevant company's website or you can try the links given on this website. The point being that anti-malware programs need to be deeply embedded and can clash with one another so thoroughly removing one before installing another is a very good idea.
As she had already used all three Norton licenses she needs to free up a license to use it again on the new machine. If she has already registered with the Norton Management site at https://manage.norton.com/ she can log in to that using the email address and password that she previously used for her account. From there she should be able to remove the license that was used on the old machine thus freeing up a license to be used on the new one. If that option is not available she should be able to get one of the Norton support staff on the free 24 hrs internet Chat link to free up the license for her.
Then, she should be able to use the Backup - Restore Files, features of N360 to get her files back from wherever they were backed up - assuming that was off the old machine.
If you need any further advice - just ask.
Should you need it, there may also be a way to get back the data even if Norton 360 has not been installed on the new machine, but that seems unnecessary in this case.

What I am replacing is the hard drive, the laptop will be reborn at that time. It will require a reinstall of the OS as well as Norton 360 among many other things. . My daughter has all of her login info for 360 so hopefully everything will work out. We will stick to your guide line and hope for a seamless restoration of her personal data. If there are any difficulties I may just add on to this thread. Again Thank You for all of your help.

Be aware you have something on your system that is trying to inject some javascript code into your posts.
The forum sotware seems to be blocking it from being active but it almost looks like it was written so that anyone who viewed it (if active) would be downloading a java script from "searchtweaker"

Thanks Dave, I did notice it but thought it was some sort of formatting error. Looking into it it is Foxlingo an addon that has been disabled. Will contact them to see exactly what’s up. Several scans have not revealed a detectable problem.
