My latest cumulative update for IE was on 25 August. The update I believe your both talking about does appear in my list of available updates, but I have a tendency to be a bit of a procrastinator with Windows updates and often I don't actually install them til a few days - sometimes even a couple weeks - after they've been released.
Until I sort out what I'm doing with Nortons, I doubt I'll install the latest batch of Microsoft updates as I don't want to muddle the situation by having to try to figure out which glitches are being caused by Nortons, and which ones are being caused by a potentially dodgy Microsoft update.

To the salesman's credit, he was absolutely right at the time. As I said, for years, Nortons never gave me any grief and Comodo Firewall was running on there the whole time. The only thing that happened - which the salesman couldn't have predicted - was that in the course of their updates, Norton changed their code to be incompatible with what's always been on my computer. This, of course, assumes that the cause of my problems is indeed a Nortons-Comodo conflict, a theory of which I am not convinced.
Thanks for the data. I'll leave others to help further but FWIW my Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit IE version is: 11.0.9600.1844913 and under that it adds that it has this Update Version:

Check your Windows update for a recent Cumulative update for IE. There was one that Win 10 users say has caused problems. Maybe there is a similar problem with the Win 7 version.
Yes, I still run Comodo Firewall as it offers important functionality that Nortons lacks. I was assured that these two software suites would be compatible by the software salesman at Dick Smith's. He seemed to know his stuff and for several years, what he said held true.
With all due respect to your computer software salesman, I would suggest that the security software developers are more qualified to determine what they will be compatible with. Most of them recommend against running two real time security products. It coud be argued that Commodo should ensure their compatibility with Norton.

I'm on Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit. If Windows 7 has any service packs I'm sure I have them installed.
The Nortons version is a bit trickier as to get this, you are essentially asking me to once again upgrade to the latest version, which presumably will lock up my computer again, then go back through the routine of having to uninstall it then reinstall the obsolete ver 21.6.0.32 so that I at least have basic protection once more. At the moment I'm also dealing with horrible ADSL line quality, so the 400+ MB download that 21.6.0.32 needs to bring itself up-to-date kills my internet for a couple hours.
Suffice to say that it was Nortons 360 when I bought the license a couple years ago, though I don't think you guys call it that anymore? And I give it free reign to update itself, so it should be whatever version is the most up-to-date one. The problems only seemed to resurface a couple days ago.

There are no actual error messages. Internet Explorer starts, seems to freeze without loading a webpage (google.com is my default) and then unceremoniously crashes. Other programs like Word and Adobe Reader don't even appear on screen at all - they just refuse to start. Again, no errors are given.

IMHO, assuming Comodo is at the heart of the problem (and I'm not convinced it is), then that is still a fault with Nortons. Comodo Firewall is a legitimate piece of software and it's not up to legitimate software developers to bend over backwards to make sure their software is compatible with Nortons, its up to Nortons to make sure that its software is innocuous to all legitimate software running on its customers' computers.
And are you still running the 2 firewalls?
Who assured you that was OK? Most AV companies recommend only one real time security product at a time. You may not have seen issues before, but when one or the other company makes changes to their code, all bets are off.

I do understand how frustrating this must be and the person to whom floplot has reported your situation is extremely good at dealing with things like this that alas do happen.
I know it will help if you would give some basic information about your system and Norton product. Here's part of my boilerplate on this:
What version of Windows are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit.The Name and Version ID of the Norton product that you are using -- Help or Support / About is where that is, in the format of nn.nn.nn.nnn where n is a number.
If you have the COMCAST version of Norton and not the normal retail version please be sure to tell us.
Please also say what internet browser you are using -- name and version number ...
If you get any error messages please give the exact wording of them as well as any other background that could be helpful.
Thanks.
