Red X is displayed on Identity Protection in the Norton 360 2.0 program interface CONSTANTLY

Ok, can't say I am a fan or Norton, but my clients use it.  So, my latest problem is the same thing here:

"your browser is not set to detect fraudulent websitesor to authenticate genuine websites".  I didn't find the answer here yet in this thread.  We are using IE7 not IE8, so that suggestion is not valid.  So far, I haven't really seen any explanation of what this really is.

Erik, can you explain what this is?What causes it?  Then maybe we can find the problem.

Thanks,

Brent

When you open IE, does the toolbar say "Phishing Expired"?  The message you've mentioned has at least 4 causes and is a generic message.

Because IE8 is in Beta, there are definitely some issues that still need to be worked out.  I would not expect this problem to persist once IE8 is fully released and any appropriate updates are made.

Erik,

IE 8 is no longer in Beta and the problem persists.

What should I do?

You are still experiencing this issue and are still using IE8?

that is right.

I updated to the IE8 final version and I still have the red x problem.

Internet Explorer 8 went from beta 2 to RC1 and Release Candidate 1 is still a form of beta so you will still have the issue

Internet Explorer 8 is Release Candidate 1 NOT Internet Explorer 8 Final

Dixie Cowgirl is correct.  Until a product is officially released it is treated as Beta.  That is true with almost all software.  Once IE8 is officially released, a patch will be available for the product to support IE8.

thank you. I use IE8 but all I have to do when that error comes up is click on fix and it fixes it and stays fixed until I close out IE8 and reopen it at a later time and then I click on fix.  I dont have to click fix repeatedly with the same IE8 window open.

I have this trouble, also.  I have IE 8, Norton 360 and am running Vista/64-bit.  Spent hours on the phone with Norton tech support to no avail.  The strange thing is that I have the same set up at work and no issue.  I welcome a solution.

Hello all,

It's my understanding that either downgrading (I would not necessarily recommend this) to IE7, waiting for IE8 to come out of beta (getting closer now with RC1) or using N360 V3 beta (it is not recommended to use this on a main computer as their can still be glitches/holes in security) or waiting for N360 V3 wide release to come out should fix the problem with the little red x popping up stating that 360 isn't providing phishing protection. Apparently the SmartScreen Filter in IE8 is blamed for this occurance. It looks to me to be that IE8 keeps trying to take over the job of Phishing protection that Norton is already doing.

One final suggestion if you have updated to IE8 RC1: Go to  Tools and navigate down the list to SmartScreen Filter and make sure that it is turned OFF.  If Smartscreen Filter reports 'Turn On SmartScreen Filter...' then you know it is already turned OFF.

I have just tried this with a few websites and have had no report of a problem from Norton. I make no guarentees but I think it is worth it to everyone that is running RC1 especially if you have the latest Microsoft updates for IE8 as I suspect I have received an update to help conquer this annoyance.

MS must have done it in anticipation of the big release from Symantec :)

Just as a sidenote [as I can no longer edit my previous message :)] is for those that would not mind a temporary fix of not having to see the alert pop up is to use Firefox.  I have seen this error about five times since updating Firefox to version 3 but that is about it for this alert. This will stop the user from having to see the pop up and hit 'Fix' each time the browser is opened, however it is another issue for people that use their bookmarks in IE8 all the time.

It is just another temporary suggestion as this will pan out one way or another in time.

I would be interested to know what the possible extent of the security risk is when a person ignores the pop up from N360?  I assume it is only reporting that the phishing protection is under the control of IE8 and not Norton until one hits the 'Fix it' button?

Microsoft is such a ridiculous company.  Every time you launch Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate 1, it turns off Phishing Protection in Norton 360 and Norton Internet Security.

The appropriate response from consumers to corporate behavior like that is to:

1. Go to http://www.mozilla.com/

2. Download Mozilla Firefox for FREE!  The latest version is just 7MB and Mozilla Firefox is an excellent SAFE, SECURE browser (unlike Internet Explorer) and very easy to use.

3. Install it.

4. And then never use Internet Explorer ever again.

5. Then you can hit the Fix button in Norton 360 or Norton Internet Security which turns Phishing Protection back on.

As long as you never use Internet Explorer, you'll never get the red X.

Problem solved!

Then, if you ever launch Internet Explorer accidentally, all it takes to fix Norton is to his the Fix button once.  Easy as pie.

Although this has been fixed in version 3 of 360 I would like to note that for people that:

- Are running WinXp SP2 with IE8 should be prepared to uninstall IE8 (if you wish to update windows to SP3) as I found out that windows requires SP3 to be installed before IE.

- (OCS) One Click Support seems to have an issue with hanging when the system is running IE8. (At least at the moment with IE8-RC1). And seems to be encountered with both WinXp and Vista.

Both issues appear to be resolved by uninstalling IE8.

Well now that IE 8 is out in final .  I have installed and am running VIsta Home Premium and still get the Red X and Norton says that my system is not set up to detect Fraudulent  .......

What gives.  You have had time to fix this!

Microsoft usually gives us at least 2 weeks notice before release, but did not this time.  Final QA is being completed with IE8 and we expect to have a patch out for N360v2 and NIS08.5 likely next week.  Additionally N360v3 and NIS09 both support IE8 at this time.

I hate to tell you this, but IE8 is not final.  The version that is out now is Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate 1.  That is not final.

Are those that have current Norton 360 v2.0 subscriptions able to upgrade to Norton 360 v3.0 for free.  If so when.

IE 8 is final. http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2009/03/19/internet-explorer-8-final-available-now.aspx

SthrnDixieCwgrl,

I hope you don't mind me chiming in, concerning your question on upgrading for users of 360.

If at any time a user that has V2 that has a current and valid 360 subscription they are entitled to upgrade to version 3 wide release from the time that is has become available for download sometime towards the beginning of March '09.

I know it is available in the US and Canada but I am not sure if it is available at the moment in all the countries services by Symantec/Norton.

The download page for 360 V3 (Standard) is:                http://www.norton.com/n360s_3

Whereas the download page for 360 V3 (Premier) is:  http://www.norton.com/n360p_3

If I recall correctly V3 is ready for 32 and 64 bit Vista but is limited to 32bit XP.

Just as a suggestion as V3 will uninstall V2 and ask if you want the settings from V2 saved as well as carry over any subscription time (and the key) that you have to V3 - I would suggest backing up the Identity Safe settings. I backed them up to the hard disk (I only have one hard drive) and then did an online backup of that same information.  Also it may not hurt to have your key handy just in case, although I have not as of yet heard of anyone having a problem with the key not being recognised automatically at the time it needs to be entered during installation of V3.

The links are provided from Tony Weiss's top sticky post located at the top of the 360 forum plus some other information.

Should there by any other issues with this please let the community know.

Take care,
