I work for a private college where all the students are required to use laptops. We are starting to field alot of questions from parents as to how they can manage their daughters internet usage after school.
This site and program look ideal and easy enough for most of our parents, however attempting to set this up on a test machine behind our school firewall has, so far resulted in a failure to login a test account and recognise a valid email address through the client.
Nortons Safety Minder setup seems to pick up our proxy server, however it fails at this point
I get a " An error occured while receiving data from the OnlineFamily.Norton. Please try again later." message while attempting to check the email address.
We use Toshiba Portege notebooks running Win XP SP3.
Default browser is IE 7-8, however the students can also use Firefox and Chrome.
Students all have Admin access on their laptops by default.
Students all connect through the schools wireless system and access the Net via a proxy in our own firewall.
We only use Sophos for Anti Virus and have no further security programs installed on the laptops.
I suppose my real question comes down to: Can this program been turned off easily for when the students are at school, and re-enabled without needing direct parent attention, say a timer, so the program is deactivated from say 8am-3pm?
Or can this be better integrated to work with pre-existing firewall/proxies, so students can move from a monitored school environment to home/friends place ect, without needing a parent to log on and manually turn the program off and on again?
Thanks in advance for any information.
