Perhaps another question would be, are registry scanners truly safe to use?  I’ve heard of people having issues after using them (not Norton 360’s in particular, however).

Some reg cleaners can be dangerous indeed . especially when you don’t know what you are doing. The on ein N360 is very safe. So no need to worry

I recently read somewhere (probably PCWorld mag) that most registry cleaners are based on the same engine and that a company just changes the user inteface.

Frankly, I don't trust a registry cleaner that says "Trust me. I know best." Especially when it doesn't give me the chance to undo what it did or at least give me the chance to backup the registry before it doesn't its thing.

You could make a back up first?

I know CCleaner does that

I know CCleaner does it. That's why I won't use 360.

I think Symantec should buy the CCleaner folks. Just as Microsoft bought SysInternals.

From what I can see, there is no way to restore changes made by N360 during the Registry Clean process, unless you use System Restore or backup the registry prior to running it.

Advanced Windows Care  is another good junk file and registry cleaner, I use it along side of CClenaer, one picks up what the other misses. While you're about it, you may want to consider using this Real Time Defragmenter , put out by the same company IObit, which defragments in the background in real time, and also has a manual defrag engine far superior to that of Windows. I've been using it for nearly two years and would never go back. A bit off track but we are all here to help each other, right?

Thanks! Will check 'em out.
