Registry Error Not Fixed With NPE

After troubleshooting for several days, I downloaded and ran NPE.  It showed I had a registry problem:

Risk: Registry

Type:  System Setting

Status:  Bad

HKEY_USERS\5-521-1775624979-1261497142-3155405689-1000\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\"HideIcons"

I ran it and said if failed.  I rebooted, ran it again, but first checked previous fixes and it showed as fixed.  The second run showed a failure.  Rebooted, opened NPE, checked previous fixes and it showe twice that it had been fixed.  Ran it again, showed failure again.

What this tells me is that although it can be removed, it comes back.  Am I wrong?

I could go back and do a system restore but I sure don't want to do that,  I have loaded so many programs in the last few days, I dread it.

Windows 7 Home Premium

Service Pack 1

64 Bit

IE10

Any help at all is sincerely appreciated!

Hi katiebuglove

The link below explains how to use NPE, it may be finding a false positive that as you say it removes then windows puts it back, I’m just guessing about that though.  Are you having any other issues with the computer?

If you could let Norton know about the problem file they can assess it for being a false positive, please use the link below.

Actually, it was a false positive that happens when you don't display your desktop icons.  Wish I would have known that earlier....

Thanks for your response, I really appreciate it!
