Hi!!! I'm new to this computer fixing thing so I'll try to explain as much as I can about the problem...
My computer crashed just before Xmas and went back to the 'original factory settings' so I lost everything from my photos to my iTunes etc and this included my NIS. I'm on automatic renewal and it renewed my account half way through this month (Jan),
The only problem is i dont know how to reinstall my NIS as I dont know which one I had? Would it be NIS 2007 which is the year of registration or would this last renewal take me to NIS 2010?? (I have Prod Serial No and the Prod Key)
I was so worried about something happening to my computer that I downloaded the trial ver of NIS 2010 which has one day left and that took me all night to download as I only have a Vodafone dongle wich is really slow!!!!!
You are eligible for a free upgrade to 2010 from the 2007 version. You should just be able to activate that trial version of 2010 fully with your old serial.
Type your NIS 2007 key into the trial version of NIS 2010 by opening NIS 2010, clicking on the Express Renewal button and then typing the key into the white slot under "Or enter your product key".
See Wikipedian's post over here for instructions with images:
As a user of NIS 2007, you can upgrade for free to NIS 2010 - all you need is your product key. Once you have activated NIS 2010, your remaining subscription days will be picked up automatically.
If you still cannot activate NIS 2010, please follow huwyngr's suggestion below and contact Symantec Customer Support.
As bombastus says you are entitled to a free upgrade with having a current subscription to an after-2006 version and entering your existing KEY Do you have a record of that, eg from the original disk envelope?
If you do not have a record of that then you can certainly get the activation sorted out by Norton's Customer Support:
You can choose CHAT or Email; phone may have a long wait time and feedback from users tells us that CHAT is by far the best at resolving problems.
Note that that link is to the USA/CAN website so if you are located elsewhere I'm sure you will be able to find the equivalent location on your local Symantec website; some pages have a link at the top right where you can select the country you are located in.
I expect you have an email from Norton confirming the renewal? Have that handy when you contact Customer Support.
If you have to reinstall again remember that those nice people at Norton put a file called Key.txt in a folder called Symantec in your Documents folder!
If you can access that when you are reinstalling and need the key you can just copy to the clipboard and paste it into the Activation box which splits it up into groups automatically!
So it's also a good idea to save a copy of that file outside the computer, like on a thumbdrive or a drive you use for backups ....
