Removal? of identified Trojans

System: desktop Win XP Pro SP3; laptop Win XP Home SP3 --both current with MS updates

Norton: (both systems) NIS 2010  17.7.0.12

I've just completed running a (manual) full scan on my desktop including a 2TB NAS device.  The scan detected/identified 2 Trojans (loaderx.class & dyesyasz.class) in a 'backup file' on the NAS.  The 'backup file' is a backup copy of my laptop.

The "File Insight" header status for both Trojans is the same: "This Virus has been removed.  No further action is needed."  In the "Activity" sections after the suspected filename  it says "Deleted".

HOWEVER; if I look at the directory path/file identified it is NOT REMOVED (from the disk drive), it is STILL LISTED but with "-xxjunk" appended to the original file name.  This same condition exists on the laptop that originally had the Trojan.

I've tried all of the available links for 'help', 'info', etc on the various history screens and CANNOT find any way that indicates how to REMOVE the suspected file from the hard drive.  Both Trojans are listed on the Quarantine History.

The wording for the Clear Entries button says "Clear all entries in this category from Security History"  --IT IS NOT CLEAR if that will in fact remove the suspected quarantined files from the drive, OR if it will simply PURGE THE LIST -leaving the files still on the drive.

Selecting "Options" on the yields the "Threat Detected" window, which offers a choice to "Remove this file from history" will also implies that the file will no longer be listed and WILL REMAIN on the hard drive.

I find the displayed prompts and the help screens to be less than informative regarding actual REMOVAL OF THREATS.

QUESTION

How can I actually be sure that the suspected files are indeed actually removed from the drive and not merely masked by changing the name?
