Remove green norton backup icons

This is so awful. The new interface sucks - is buggy as hell. I’m not going to be renewing my subscription at all.

In addition to it being ugly & distracting, when the file view is set to see a small icon & you have a couple of different types of files in a folder, you can’t tell what type of file it is unless you click to open it. What a mess!

I wanted to let you know that my issue is resolved - at least for now. I called Norton’s customer service at 800-745-6061 to voice my complaint about the mess this change has caused. After some persistence with the automated prompts, I did get through to a human customer service rep. She was very nice & patient as I made the complaint & made it clear that it is a deal breaker continuing my subscription if this cannot be resolved soon. Although I was not looking for anything but the fix for this issue, she gave me a free upgrade for my programs & extra days on my subscription for being a long-time customer & the inconvenience. But more importantly she agreed to put me through to speak with a technician. I received a case ID that linked to the documentation of the issue so not to have to start from scratch in further calls.

The support line to was also handled by an Indian representative & the connection after the transfer was so awful that I could not make out what words were even being said, so I got a phone number that goes directly to the tech side. I called back later & the connection was much clearer & the lady was also very nice & patient. She did the viewer connection to my computer to see the problem. She uninstalled Norton’s altogether & the overlays came off. Then she installed the previous version of my package & said that within 24 hours the update would run to install the current version. I thought she had run the default Cloud back up but I checked after the call & found that the was turned off.

I asked her if I should expect the overlays to return after the update & doing the backup & she said no BUT I am not sure that I will activate that function, at least until after the hide overlay function is restored into the software, as has been mentioned here.

Since the program updates are no longer done manually with an installation package anymore, I would not have had a previous version to install after uninstalling the version I have running, without going through support.

I did suggest that the tech support staff check this forum so they can see how unhappy the users are about losing that hide overlay option, noting too that others here are also considering cancelling or not renewing their Norton’s subscriptions or finding another program.

I don’t know if you already need to have a case ID # to actually get to speak with a live tech person or not but that phone number is 800-745-6061.

This process took some time – over an hour on the initial call & close to that with the tech side.
I hope this info will be helpful for you!

Here is the exact wording from the chat support rep: “However, I suggest you to not run the live updates as it will update the Norton app again”. The rollback version link provided during the chat brought me back to version 22.24.2.6, which still contains the “Classic” Settings view. On the right of the Settings menu is a “Quick Controls” panel where you can turn off “Automatic Live Update.” Just be aware that virus definitions, etc will not be auto downloaded if this is turned off - you will have to manually update Norton. Hope this helps. Really hoping they bring back the option to turn off the overlays as others have mentioned!

just remember to also at disable auto update

Just sent this not Norton:
PLEASE REMOVE THE ICON OVERLAYS ASAP. I am seriously considering to cancel my NORTON products if you continue handling customers like idiots.
Changing settings and layout of your products is not helpful for customers. Your job, being paid by your customers, is to satisfy the customers, not to take over our devices.

I will be canceling my subscription because of this ridiculous issue: backup icon overlay mess and the recently missing ability to remove them. Many people have complained and Norton support cannot deal with the issue. I have already gone to another AV program and handle backups with a different application. Norton needs to care about their customers more. Failing to hear about a change to this issue, my subscription will be ending after being subscribed for MANY YEARS.

25.4.10068 (build 25.4.10068.0)

Norton Security 25.4.10068 for Windows is now available!

4. What’s new in Norton 25.4.10068?

  • Settings to remove backup overlay icons on shortcuts

This is an incredibly annoying, intrusive feature. There’s certainly enough “stuff” on my desktop without my having to see anything extra. I’d like to use the backup - after all, technically I paid for it - but the feature is completely unnecessary and should be an option when you back up or manage the backups, not something that appears out of the blue.

Just look at the two posts above yours and you will see that the option to not show these overlays has been returned.

Thank you everyone. Very glad they listened to user comments. Appreciate everyone letting me know what to do now that there’s a new version.
