Removing Norton IPS 2.0 From FF 3.5.6

Hello,

How can I REMOVE the Norton IPS 2.0 extension from Firefox version 3.5.6? I just installed NAV 2010 and noticed this new extension in FF and would REALLY like a way to GET RID OF IT.

TIA!

Hi clint45,

Is the extension causing you problems in Firefox?  IPS is the Norton Intrusion Prevention System which guards against malware being delivered to your system via an exploit of a software vulnerability.  The Firefox add-on specifically looks for attacks using security holes that may exist in the browser.  While this feature is not essential because other functions of NIS will be able to deal with any malware that tries to run, regardless of its method of installation, it nevertheless is the best means of blocking browser exploits that use evasive tactics to avoid detection.  In a response to a Norton Blog question I asked concerning the Firefox IPS add-on , Symantec Employee Ameya said:

Without giving away too many internal details, we need presence in the browser for certain threats we can't effectively detect with other methods. These threats use various evasion techniques that make them difficult to catch by other means. Browser plug-in is one of the shilds we have in our product to protect users from Malware.

I realize that it might be a very helpful tool to have but not having a way to remove it just annoys the heck out of me! Sure, I may indeed leave it enable but GIVE ME THE POWER TO DECIDE whether or not I want it installed, just don't install it and not give me a way to remove it. I mean, the last time I checked I'm the one that paid for the computer and should be the one that decides whether or not to install something.

So to that end, if anyone knows a way to REMOVE THIS EXTENSION please feel free to contact me directly.

Thanks Much!

Exit your Mozilla application, go to your profile folder and open the "extensions" directory. Each directory there is an extension. Remove the directory that corresponds to the extension you want to uninstall. (To uninstall ALL extensions, remove the entire "extensions" directory)

If an add-on directory there does not have a meaningful name, look inside it for its "install.rdf" file. Open that file in a text editor (such as Notepad) to see which extension the directory contains.

Alternatively, in the parent folder, "extensions.rdf" contains a list of extensions, their names and corresponding GUIDs.

I tried to locate the extension in my default profile extension folder but it's not listed there:

C:\Documents and Settings\myname\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.od3\extensions

The offending extension is not listed there so, it must be somplce else? I've yet to find out where though as it not listed here either:

 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions

The only thing listed here is:

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0007-ABCDEFFEDCBA}

So anybody ele have any ideas?

Thanks!
