Renewing NIS 2009

I only have about 31 days left on my 3 year 3 PC subscription.  My question is if I renew it, will I be eligible for an NIS 2010 upgrade or would I have to buy that separately?

As far as install, I've read that NIS 2010 could be installed over NIS 2009 and also I've read where one should run NRT x2 before installing.  Is there a correct way to get this done?

I'm going to go ahead and renew but wanted to throw these questions out there.  With the advent of NIS 2009, Norton's footprint has been significantly been reduced.  I really like that aspect.

Thanks for any help rendered.

I am going to renew my NIS 2009 however, can I purchase a retail edition (which is half price at the moment in most shops) and just enter a new activation/product key within the existing NIS 2009 without installing it all again? This way will it will be cheaper than renewing it through Norton.

Hi Hermjca,

You can simply purchase a new subscription that way your product key remains valid. Also, since you have got NIS 2009, you can, after renewing your NIS 2009 subscription, upgrade for free to NIS 2010 via the Norton Update Center (all you need is a current subscription):

http://updatecenter.norton.com/

NIS 2010 will install over NIS 2009 and automatically pick up your product key and number of subscription days.

So do I just take the new code from the side of the new box and enter it into the subscription bit of the original program. Is that all I will have to do?

You have bought a packaged version? Yes, the product key should be written on the CD sleeve or packaging; you just enter it into the product when it's time for activation. And as mentioned before, you can upgrade for free to NIS 2010.

Thanks

You’re welcome

I installed NIS 2010 over the top of 2009 via norton update and everything went well and works perfectly. :smileywink:

I appreciate the responses from BlitzXor and NervousWreck.

NervousWreck: Was that a Live Update that you're referring to or an upgrade?  I've read that one should be careful as to when to upgrade since you may lose subscription days.  Was this an issue for you?

Hi phantom, It was an upgrade from 2009 to 2010 at http://updatecenter.norton.com/.  I had 307 days left on my subscription on 2009 after the upgrade to 2010 it was still 307 days. Everything carried over.

Hello phantom

You do not get product upgrades thru live update. By that I mean, you can not upgrade from a 2009 product to 2010 by running live update. If you are upgrading and keeping the same key, then the days are carried over to the 2010 product. If you have bought a new key like in a boxed version and you use the new key, then your days are lost. When you have a new key, then you should wait till like a day or two before the expiration date to enter your new key.

To go from 2009 to 2010, you can use the update center, or a link from the Forum when someone posts it for you or you can use a boxed version. You can do which ever way comes out cheaper for you. If you buy a boxed version though, you usually end up with a more up to date version by getting the link from in the Forum or from the Norton Website as the CD version will be a static one. But you can still use the key from the boxed version to activate it.

Hi Flopot:

I appreciate the quick responses from all of you.  I did an online renewal from the Norton icon in the system tray.  I have completed that at this point and I have 761 days showing up.  I had to force synchronization as explained in the renewal process on two of the pcs.  All are synched at this point.

The key is the same as I've had the last three years so I don't have to worry about a new key.

I guess I can upgrade the pcs to NIS 2010 one at a time over a week or so.  I assume I don't have to do all of them in one day???

What a great forum to help with questions so quickly.  You folks are great!

Thank to all,

Phantom

Hello phantom

You don't have to upgrade them all in one day. The countdown started when the first computer was updated. You shouldn't have any problems activating the other computers either. If you have any problems, please come back and let us know.

Hi Folks:

I have all three computers (2 pcs and 1 laptop) updated to NIS 2010 and all now have 759 days of subscription left.  I just let the Norton installer remove the old version and it installed the new versions on each system without any issues.

Everything looks great at this point.  I'm covered for the next two years.

Thanks for all your help,

Phantom.
