I hope to be renewing my Norton360v.2 very soon.I am looking for advice as to whether I should remove my present installation before I install my new one.I will be doing it from a CD I will be purchasing soon. The reason I ask the question is because I am having a problem with my present installation(see devices on your network are not responding posted here on 15th.August).I have been in touch with Symantec who inform me they are working on my problem.

All the latest versions of Norton products are integrated with the Norton Removal tool. So it is not necessary to remove the existing version before installing the latest one. Still if you wish, you can remove the V1 by using the removal tool SymNRT

Great question! If you think your current installation might cause problems in the future install, then I would recommend that you run the Norton Removal Tool to clean out the current corrupt install. Be sure to read the document carefully before running the tool.

From what you're describing, it sounds as if you want Subscription Renewal - the same product, but with more subscription time, right? Your most economical solution might not be to purchase a full version of the product in this case. The previous posters have hinted at this, that you don't need to purchase a full version of the product to continue your protection. You can purchase an extension to your subscription through the product, or HERE.  Be sure to choose the "Please just renew my subscription" option, as the other options include additional products or they are the "upgrade" (which is really just a discounted Full Version). This way, your activation key will remain the same, and you don't need to uninstall/reinstall anything. It's just an extension of your subscription time. And when Norton 360 v3 becomes available, and if your subscription is still valid, you can Update to that version for free.

I hope this helps, please let me know if you need any more information. Thanks!

Hi learner44

It's normally a wise idea to run the Norton Removal Tool so you can perform a clean install of the product. There have been cases in the past where the automatic install has caused problems, and some users have had to go back and run the tool and install again. It doesn't take long to run the tool so I would advise you run it prior to installing N360v2.

John

Edit: If you are currently running Version 1 which I presume you are, you should do as Tony says and just renew your subscription, THEN download the latest version of N360 here and THEN run the removal tool prior to installing it. Simply use your existing product key which you have just renewed. Hope this helps!

Thanks to everyone for their replies.A bit more information-

I had Norton 360v1 for about 9 months before I got a free upgrade from Norton to v2.Everything runs o.k. except for the new feature "my network".I have been in contact with Symantec since then, tried a few things they told me to do,but so far, none of them have worked. The latest was to send them a log file which I have done, and am currently waiting on a response. The reason I asked the question was I thought it may be best to uninstall and start afresh, because I have read a lot of different opinions on this. Also, call me old-fashioned,but I will not use my credit card over the Internet,so I will be purchasing my new Norton from either Curry's or Argos who both have stores near me,and my daughter will be sharing the cost because her subscription is due the same time as me,so obviously this halves the cost to me.

Go online and shop around; for example, this week you can buy Norton 360v.2 for 40$ at Bestbuy. Upgrading/renewing at the Symantec store is one of the most expensive options.

Ah, so you are in the UK <g> It's always a good idea when asking for support to mention this since, for example, if you were going to download a copy you need to get it from the UK website of Symantec so that the copy you get is localized for your copy of Windows -- we've had some examples here of fixes not working because of this.

Here in the USA you can get from your credit card company on line a single use "credit card number" when you need it if you are worried about security and you just use that for a single purchase.

Certainly if you don't get a reply soon from Symantec from the log file you sent them, post a message here about that and one of the Norton Staffers can certainly chase it down.

Thanks for your reply huwyngr.I never thought of the fact to say I was from the U.K.I’ll remember that in the future.Do you think it’s possible that my problem could be caused by the link I used to download my upgrading from v1 to v2 was not for the U.K?I know the e-mails I was getting from Symantec were from the U.S.A. and the logfile I sent was to the U.S.A.

I learned about this from Norton Staffers dealing with some problems that were cropping up with the update from N360 V1 to V2 and it turned out that some were in the Netherlands and some in Germany and getting the local files seemed to deal with it.

And as a former British resident now living in Florida I can spot some familiar names from time to time -- someone posted about buying a copy from PC World and I said I assume you mean the UK Store and not the US magazine <g>

The best I can say about your past experience is that anything is possible but that since you plan to buy a local "hard copy" then that should take care of that -- but if you do apply manual updates for some reason, not via LiveUpdate, then make sure you get them from Symantc's site for the UK. Similarly if you want to try out a trial version of something.

I would definitely use the Norton Removal Tool after the normal uninstall and again now that we know you are in the UK check out their website for it. I'll do some looking around to see if I can pin that down.

I checked out the Symantec UK site and it rather looks as they refer you to a global source for the Norton Removal Tool:

http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?OpenDocument

At least that is what I got from a search for it there -- everything else to do with removal sends you to chat.....

Thank you very much for your advice, huwyngr, and for the time you have taken helping me with my problem.I have now made up my mind what to do.I notice from the Symantec UK site you gave me that it is only £5 cheaper to upgrade and with my daughter sharing the cost of the copy I will be buying,it is not breaking the bank to pay for the new CD.I will be doing as you say in your last paragraph i.e.uninstall,run the Norton Removal Tool, and installing from the CD.

Thanks also to everyone else for all the help and advice you have all gave me.It is much appreciated.

Sounds good -- just make sure that when you buy, you get the 3 User version so that it can be shared in the family.

You know where to come if you need any help .....

I certainly will and thanks again.

Upgrading to the latest version is easy. You can install the new version over the previous version. If you have problems - feel free to ask questions here, in Norton Community Forums!
