Mc Stick,

Thank you for responding to my question.  I have two more questions though.  Must I do the steps you described on my other two computers?  After completing the steps on all my three computers, will the year subscription be added to any days remaining on the original subscription?  Thank you again for your help.

Yes, you can perform the same steps on the other two computers also. But you will get only the 1 year subscription for the product. In order to get the days remaining on the Norton product, you need to contact customer service. They can add the subscription for you.

Two further points:

-- don't apply that new purchased KEY until the last moment before expiry of the old KEY since not all purchased versions add to unexpired periods on the old installation.

-- also by waiting you can download the Trial Version of NIS2009 when it comes out on the market shortly and use the KEY you got with your NIS2008 to activate the NIS2009 version. It's worth having for its speed and lightfootedness!

And YES I'm sure you have to repeat the exercise for the other two computers but, I think, using for them the selection in Activation "Use an existing KEY" once you have recorded that in your Norton Account the first time.

I worded my reply slightly differently since I'm not myself absolutely sure that this is the case if you buy a retail copy of a product -- I thought at one time it did, and so did some Norton Staffers, and then I think I found it the hard way that it did not and also one of the Norton Staffers (Tony Weiss?) corrected an earlier statement to read that this only applied if you purchased subscriptions from Norton on line and not if you bought a retail product.

I'll look to see if I bookmarked the message unless you have a record of it.

"Nobody ever said it would be simple ...."

Thank you everyone for your help.  I contacted Customer Support by e-mail last evening and they replied this morning.  The technician said to e-mail him back with the new NIS 2008 key before he would help me.  Since I didn’t know why he wanted the key I wrote to this forum to see if anyone could help me.  After reading numerous postings I believe he wants the key so that he can add the remaining days to the new key subscription.  Anyway, the product I ordered has not arrived yet, but wanted to do some homework before it arrives.  If anyone knows for sure on the steps to accomplish using the new key for the installed NIS 2008, I would be very greatfull.  The reason why I purchased the full retail boxed version of NIS 2008 is becaused I purchased it considerably less than the $49.99 Symantec on-line subscription renewal price.  Anyway, once the product arrives and I e-mail the key back to the Norton technician, I will write back with what hw tells me.  Again, thank you everyone for any help.

I currently have Norton Internet Security 2008 3 PC version installed on 3 of my computers.  The subscription runs out later this month.  Last evening I purchased a box retail version of Norton Internet Security 2008 3 user and am wondering if I can use the new CD key to reactivate and renew the subscription for another year for the already installed software.  I don’t want to unistall the software because I will loose all my updates and settings.  Basically, is there a way to renew the subscription of the already installed NIS 2008 using the CD key of the new retail version I purchased last night.  Thanks for any help.

You are not the only one to do this -- check the box for a mail in rebate form for upgrading in case there is one ....

I've flagged your message for one of the Norton Staff to see and clarify just what you should do.

Thank you huwyngr for your help and for flagging my message.  There are currently two Symantec rebates for NIS 2008 3 PC version.  With both rebates applied the program will cost very little.  The on-line subscription renewal costs $49.99 so it is a no brainer to know why I purchased the new program.  If Symantec will offer rebates I certainly will use them.  When my NIS 2007 subscription expired, Symantec wanted to renew it for $49.99.  That weekend Staples had NIS 2008 on sale for $9.99 with one Symantec rebate.  Again I saved money by using what Symantec was offering.  When I went from 2007 to 2008 I uninstalled the 2007 version.  After a couple of days I had all my settings and updates back, which was time consuming.  This time I'm trying to avoid uninstalling the program so that I won't loose my updates and settings by applying the new CD key.  Thanks again to everyone.

I really couldn't have said it better.
Well done, Huwy

Flattery will get you almost anything …

Here's the best thing to do:

1) When NIS 2009 is released, a FREE UPDATE will become available. Download and install that update, and your current NIS 2008 subscription will be applied to that product

2) When your NEW NIS 2008 order comes in, wait until your current subscription is near the end, then enter the new activation key. A NIS 2008 activation key will work on the NIS 2009 product, and will give you the current subscription time on that product

Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thanks!

People have always argued between "install on top of" and "clean install" -- do you think that "on top of" when installing NIS2009 is likely to be less risky than many feared in the past because of the difference in structure between the old and the new?

Does NIS 2009 in fact do a normal uninstall when it finds an earlier Norton product to replace?

There's a thread here where your input would be welcome since someone is suggesting a very large excavator!

Thank you Tony for your advise.  One more question, is NIS 2009 that will be available for download, a trial version?  Or is it a full version that we can use for one year?  When or how will I know when the download is available?  Sorry, two questions.  Thanks again!

Norton trial versions *ARE* full versions with a short 14-day time limit as downloaded.   When you add YOUR activation key the 14 day time limit changes to what you have left on your subscription.  If your activation key is new and never before used, then that would typically be 1 year (although there are keys with other lengths of subscriptions).

As for when NIS 2009 is going to be available, none of the offical Norton folks (those with RED names) have said exactly, but reading between the lines (this thread even) it looks like the wait won't be long at all......

Thank you 4runner for your reply.

Call me suspicious, but why is Symantec going to allow us to download a full version of their new NIS2009 and use our 2008 key to activate it?  Why are they being so generous?  Are they using people like us to beta test the product before they release the boxed retail version?  Does anyone know for sure if the 2008 keys will activate the product for a year or more subscription?  Will the downloaded 2009 version be able to be installed on three PC's using the same key?  Just food for thought.  Maybe these questions have already been answered, so my apologies if they have.  If they have could someone provide the links to the forum messages.  Thanks

It's the way norton has sold there products lately.... not sure what version started it.. maybe 2006...  but the short version of the story... is that as long as you have a valid subscription (days remaining) you are entitled to the latest versions...   so not only do you definition updates..but also any program updates...including new versions.....

The public beta test has already been done.... check out another part of the forums: Norton Public Beta Forum

Thanks 4runner for the information.  That makes sence why Symantec charges $49.99 to renew yearly subscriptions.  This cost will cover the downloaded new version software.  My only question remaining then is, will the downloaded NIS 2009 be able to installed on three PC’s.  Thanks again.

That depends on the key you have… if you have a 3-user key then yes…
